Default Just Moved in to LA

Hey there!
I'm Andy and have just moved to LA a month ago from Santiago, Chile.
I've just bought my bike (Cannondale Rush 1 Carbon...sweet!) and am looking now for trails and pepole to ride with...

I live in the Brentwood area, so anyone around or suggestions of trails close are greatly appreciated!

Also, I'm trying to get my wife into MTB as well, so beginner and easy going trails for her to start in would be great too...

See you around!

Andy.

Welcome. Lots of nice trails near by (North of Sunset). For starters, Sullivan Canyon is a nice mild ride up and down. The last 1/4 mile is a little steep but she can always stop and tur around at that point. Another pretty tame dirt road is Westridge. Leads up to the old Nike Missile base just south of Mulholland.

Also, Dirt Mulholland (accessed from the 405, off of Skirball/Mulholland exit) has nice tame fire roads that go for ever.

Best of luck!

Welcome!

Nice, another West LA'er! There are plenty of trails/fireroads near where you live, in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Westridge, Sullivan Ridge, Sullivan Canyon, Will Rogers Backbone to name a few. I'm always riding in the area if you want a tour. Though I will be out of town until 3/22. Send me a PM with your contact info, and I'll let you know the next time I go out for a ride.

to the group!
A popular source for trail routes and info is Geoladders. It's free, and there's quite a bit there for Santa Monica. I'm sure some more locals will chime in.

Welcome! I also live in Brentwood, so I'd be more than happy to go riding and show you the trails in the SM's.

Thank you guys for the welcome...
I haven't been riding for a while (nor worked out, been quite busy moving from another country and settling down here in LA) so I'm guessing my shape is not very good...
So if anyone is planning to have a "light" ride this weekend I'd be very interested to join in...drop me an email or PM to get in touch...

See you!

Ok, since I'm new in town, I'm not still familiar with the different locations...How can I get to Sullivan Canyon and Westridge (I live in Barrington and Sunset)? I looked for them at google maps and although I found them, couldn't tell where the trails start...

Thanks!

(maybe I should post this in trail talk right? )

And when I get there, it's going to be obvious where the trail starts?

Sullivan Canyon trail entrance is at the end of Queensferry Rd. off of Bayliss Rd. I'm not sure where to catch the Westridge trail. Be very careful and read the posted No Parking signs.

The hiker/biker entrance is to the left of the wooden gate. Follow the paved downhill and go right at the bottom.

OK, so seeing it on google maps I'll get into Farmers Fire Rd...I guess going north is uphill and then I can either come back the same way or at the end take a left and switch to Sullivan Fire Rd. (downhill).

Any chances of getting lost if I go and explore the terrain by myself (no GPS but a good sense of orientation )?

There's always a "possibility" of getting lost. It's just very slim. Just remember which trail you took and back track on your way out.

Farmers Fire road is not really a fire road. Well, not any more at least. It's a very fun singletrack. Yes, north is uphill, but VERY slight until you reach about the 3.5 mile mark then it's about a 3/4 mile grunt up about 400-500 feet of elevation gain to the Sullivan Fire road.

There is no loop that will take you all the way back to your car without riding on the streets to get back. I prefer to ride up Farmers Fire road up to Sullivan Fire road then, depending on who I'm with, ride up along the ridge then come back down Farmers Fire (very fun coming back down) road to the car. Just keep your speed under control as this is a very popular trail for bikers and hikers alike.

Welcome to the westside

to get to the Westridge fireroad from Sunset and Barrington:

Take Sunset west to Mandeville Canyon.
Take a right onto Mandaville and the first left on to Westridge. Follow it all the way to the top and you will see the gate.

To get to the start of Sullivan Canyon you'll want to take a left off of Westridge onto Bayliss. You usually have to park on Bayliss but watch the signs. Head down Queensferry to the trailhead.

Sullivan Ridge trailhead is a little further west.
Take Sunset to Capri.
Turn rt. on Capri and head all the way up.
Park up at the end of Capri.
Capri ends at Casale road, turn left on Casale and you hit the gate for the fireroad.

Lynn
