While I lived in Orange County, I pursued a dream of riding a 40 mile loop through Cleveland Nat Forest. I had a 10 mile loop that I'd ride in NB, up San Joaquin Hills Road to Newport Coast Blvd, down to the coast then back up, and down SJHR. This loop three times a week. Every two weeks I'd get my Clydesdale butt over to Moijeska and bang up the Harding Truck Trail as far as I could. Being in my 50's, I felt that I was making serious progress toward my goal.
I moved back to Houston before I could finish my dream ride, but I planned on making a trip to OC just to do the big ride. I love the area, I've got roots there. Now for the medical warning: don't ignore the flu! I did and it nearly killed me. I caught the flu, but instead of going to bed and treating it, I continued to work, fly, and suffer. Two months later I developed a cough - so bad that the Doctor treated me for viral pneumonia. I kept flying, and working. I got on 500 mg antibiotics, and kept going. In a remote city, I found myself sitting up in bed to sleep, for if I laid down, I couldn't breathe. I drug myself home and went to the Dr again. This time I went to bed for a week. Time passed, I didn't feel real well and my Dr. sent me to a Cardiologist. The upshot, I'd caught a strain of the flu which wound up attacking my heart. How badly? With a normal ejection fraction, 60-75% of the blood in your left ventricle leaves on each beat. I was barely making 20%, and I felt better than I had. Now almost four years later I'm back up to 55%. There's general agreement that when I was sitting up to sleep, I was somewhere around 15% - that's Congestive Heart Failure - you can die really easily. From the Dr. "If you hadn't been as healthy as you were, you'd have been in deep sneakers." Mountain biking literally did save my life. |
