San Juan at the top and the bottom (and the middle) is all national forest land, so it is closed, right?

Default Hot off the presses - O'Neill is OPEN

From County Of Orange RDMD/Harbors Beaches & Parks website (www.ocparks.com):

Updated Fire Information

10/31/07: O'Neill Regional Park Reopens; Irvine Regional Park, Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park remain closed.

by Marisa O'Neil, Public Affairs Specialist on 10/31/2007

Limestone Canyon, Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park and Irvine Regional Park will remain closed until further notice due to the Santiago Fire.

Irvine Regional Park remains closed to the public while firefighters use the park for staging and operations areas. Please use caution and watch for fire traffic in the surrounding area.

Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park suffered significant fire damage and will remain closed until the public can return safely and without damaging the fragile environment. Though these parks burned extensively, the land will recover with proper care. Historically, these natural communities burn every 20 to 70 years.

Additionally, the Santiago Equestrian Center at Limestone and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park and the Irvine Park Railroad remain closed until further notice.

The following parks have reopened to the public:

Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park
Caspers Wilderness Park
Heritage Hill Historic Site
Laguna Coast Wilderness Park
O'Neill Regional Park
Peters Canyon Regional Park
Riley Wilderness Park
Santiago Oaks Regional Park
Yorba Regional Park

Please respect the wilderness and stay out of burned areas and off of closed trails. The fire has left the wilderness in a fragile state. Premature access could damage plants that are trying to come back after the fire and could further traumatize displaced animals. Firefighters, park rangers and other resource agencies need the public to comply with the park and trail closures until such time as it is both safe for the public and not harmful to the environment. The public is advised that these closures will be strictly enforced.

OC Parks will have a large job ahead to clear trails and facilities of fallen trees and debris created by the high winds. An assessment will be made regarding when these closed areas might open to the public again.

This website will be updated to advise visitors as to when the parks will reopen. It is important for the public to be safe, to keep out of the way of fire-fighting operations and to respect nature's healing process.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Information regarding the local fires may be found on the Orange County Fire Authority Web Site www.ocfa.org.

Information regarding the smoke advisory may found on the South Coast Air Quality Management District Web Site www.aqmd.gov.

The verdugos are also open in the LA/pasadena area. Not much technical stuff, but some decent singletrack and plenty of options for putting in a lot of mileage.

I stay away from AW on the weekends anyway... I am over getting run over while heading up meadows, or even coyote, or dripping cave.
