Single speed bikers don't have shifters and multiple gears. They talk about gear ratios. A gear ratio of 2:1 is the holy grail of SS MTB'rs. In the hilly area we are at a 2:1 is very difficult to pedal up hill. So we are discussing the number of teeth on the chainring/cog (32/20). The ratio would be something like a 1.6:1. You would need to be a mathmetician to figure it all out. 32 tooth chainring divided by the 20 tooth cog = 1.6 .

An example of how a 2:1 is derrived . Things like chainstay length, chainlength and tire diameter have a small affect but we will simplify it down to teeth on the chainring/cog. The "2" is two complete revolutions of the rear wheel : to 1 complete revolution of the crank.
