I've got the same bike as jasonmason (good to meet you Sunday) - had it for about 2 years, it's a pretty good bike with pretty good components. It's the '05, I read up on it, this mode is supposed to have fixed the chain stay issue (hasn't snapped yet!)

I would actually recommend buying a bit cheaper bike to start off with, maybe even look on ebay, craigslist, in the paper or on this site! It's a blast riding anything. Then when you get out you start talking to other guys, looking around and testing other bikes (like Sunday at the Adrenaline demo day) you'll start to see what's around and what you like.

When I bought my bike I didn't know a lot (hadn't found this site yet) but did look at the reviews on mtbr. Now I have a better idea of my riding style, and where I'm going with the way I ride, so I'm looking at different bikes trying to figure out what's next. That way if you don't bust the bank, upgrading or buying a completely new bike won't hurt as much.

The Jamis is a great bike for the money. Ride it and have a great time. That is all that matters. If it was not a decent bike I would have never let My wife ride one.
It was her first bike.

Didn't forget them. I only listed companies that make adult sized bikes

Default Jamis is a good Solid starter bike..

Jamis will do the job..
they are good solid built bikes...
I have a Jamis Komodo..
good nicely built bike..
for the price it works well...then theirs the Dakar Full Suspension.but thats more $$...

I wouldn't recommend going to Walmart, target, costco, etc....
those are ride 2 times a year kind of bikes..

If you go riding 1 or 2 times a week...Jamis is good..
you can upgrade from their once you save some money and get better on the mountian..

Had the Jamis Dakar hardtail in college (bout '92) and still regret selling it to "upgrade" to a Cannondale 500 hardtail. That bike ripped like a bmx on steroids. Hot red with a super angled top tube, great for throwing around all day in the NY swamps with little to no mechanical issues. If you see one, let me know

I ride a Jamis Diablo 1.0. Upgraded forks to Zocchi 888 RC2x and pedals to Crank Bros 50/50.

Works fine for everything. I did crack the frame by the shock pivot, but they replaced it no problems.

Don't crack the frame again till AFTER we get back from Northstar! Then you can destroy it all you want. Or you will be riding your DJ bike on the DH trails! Well, that can't be THAT bad!
