9.8m/secē - It's the law

Default The first thing I did with OS X Leopard...

There were 300 new features of Mac OS X Leopard.

After a pain-free upgrade from Tiger, the first thing I did was check out the Web Clipping feature of Safari 3.

You're able to create a widget from any portion of a web page that updates dynamically. I made a web clipping of the "Recent Posts" on STR:

So I no longer have to open up the STR page in a browser window to check out the latest stuff. All I have to do is pop open Dashboard and see what's going on.

Now to play with the rest of the OS...I'm not gonna be sleeping tonight.

And after a quick check...

This rules!!

Default Hey George

How about RSS for us DOS peasants?

So I sat down and configured a Mac Pro, clicked on dual quad-core and added $1498 to the price.

Doug,

You can go to George's blog at the bottom of STR and he has a RSS feed for STR there on the right column. Just point to that one. You can also run Windows on an Intel Mac. From my experience, I think Windows runs faster on my MacBook. Go figure.

the one thing i'm really disappointed with and ceedub you can confirm is that it doesnt allow for you to use an external HDD plugged into your airport extreme to act as your time machine backup.

It doesn't?!? WTF?!?

My external is at work and I haven't upgraded that iMac yet...

That's kind of a bummer, I don't like to be tethered...

I'll find out more later...

thanks if you could that would be great...i'm kinda miffed about it because it totally defeats the purpose of hooking up the HDD to the airport extreme's usb port

Hey doug . . . here's the RSS feed: http://www.socaltrailriders.org/foru....php?type=RSS2

It doesn't 'bump' threads like the homepage does - it puts newest threads on top regardless of which ones have the newest posts in them.

Time Machine can backup over the network but only to AFP shares, accdg. to Engadet's observation

Here's what I found: http://arstechnica.com/journals/appl...d-airport-disk

There's tons of other articles if you do this Google search.

While this is a definite bummer, it's not a total waste. External HDDs are relatively inexpensive and the extra wireless storage on the network is still convenient.

As far as wireless Time Machine...I'll say this: I don't back up now. I don't currently recover old deleted files. Physically plugging in a hard drive ain't too much of a big deal.

Apple said this was going to be a feature, but maybe it wasn't quite working properly. I would rather not have a feature than to have a buggy one. Perhaps we'll get it in a future update.

Airport Extreme was already set up a long time ago. I already have an external HDD. So I'm not going to complain about a feature I never had before anyway...

If you have a cheap old PC laying around, put a big disk in it, install Fedora Core Linux, and install netatalk, (yum -y install netatalk) You will have a nice AFP server, although you will have to edit a text file to add additional shares.

I've used Fedora Red Hat for awhile now and I also love MAC OS X. Why would anyone bother with crappy resource intensive Windows Vista??

Because it's "free" when you buy a new $400 laptop. If you bought the laptop for light-weight tasks there's no payoff in optimizing.

On a desktop XP pro.
