Default Whiting Ranch - Help Needed

Kens Rands of SHARE has put out the call for help this weekend at Whiting. It's not time for clean-up yet but we need help keeping people out of the park as it is still closed. There are still hot spots and dangerous situations such as falling trees, etc.

We need to inform people the park is closed at all entrance points. If you can volunteer a few hours this weekend contact Ken at sharemtb@cox.net.

Thanks,

Not sure if it is posted elsewhere, but I got a late notice email out to SHARE volunteers to assist with letting folks know the park (Whiting/Limestone) is closed. Meeting at Borrego at 8am for two hour (or whatever you are avaiable) shifts at Main, Glen Ranch and Concourse Park. Here is some of the email... I'll be there at 8am to help out.

From Ken Rands (SHARE Volunteer Cord)
As you all know, most of Whiting-Limestone Wilderness Park burned this week. The park will remain closed until further notice, due to the dangerous conditions. There are still hot spots and falling trees.

The park has asked SHARE and friends to help inform people of the closure at all the entrance points. edit

We hope and pray for our friends in Silverado.

Thanks

If anyone is interested, show up at the entrance to Whiting on Portola(Borrego entrance).

Just got back from working the 9:30am-12:30pm shift at Glenn Ranch. Mostly a bunch of lookie-loos. But apparently up at Concourse Park in Portola some people didn't want to listen to the ranger and the sheriff was called. About 5 min later 4 motor officer and two black and white showed up at the Glenn Ranch entrance by accident. I then sent them up to Concourse.

The ranger was out assessing damage and removing debris from the roads. One fire crew from Idaho came throughthe gate to but out a smoldering oak tree along Serrano. I'm sad to report the park is about 95% burned.

While I was on watch we got some light sprinkles in Whiting so hopefully that means rain higher up where the fire is.

The firefighters could use some extra help from Mother Nature.

Alot of credit goes to Ken Rands of SHARE for arrrnaging the citizen patrols around Whiting on such short notice. Also thanks to the other volunteers out there.

Thanks to SHARE for jumping in on this important task.

The lookie-loo's are normally pretty innocent, but there is still some danger out in the area.

In the limestone area very close to where the fire was started, oaks are still smoldering inside almost 6 days later, and I had one very large oak fall across the trail no more than an hour after I drove by previously.

Since Monday I've monitored a couple of very large downed trees and watched them simply smolder away into ash over a few days.

Even after the oaks stop smoldering, many of them will be subject to toppling in the next winds when they come, or will potentially come down in the next rain (even a light one) due to the branches soaking up water and becoming heavy.

We're definitely not of the danger period yet and won't be for some time.

Stay safe out there

Oops....lot's of previous miss-spellings. Pretty tired lately.

Glad to see the message get out. I was at the Glen Ranch entry and as stated above, mainly folks wanting a closer look, many locals taking pics. Couple of riders early that understood the No Entry.
