Unhappy Malibu!

I love Malibu. I feel so bad seeing this and I feel so bad for the animals! There is a wildlife rehab center on Piuma and I hope they got all the animals out!
I pray it doesnt get to Topanga. That is nothing but tinder! Fall is the best time in SoCal and the worst time!
I feel bad for all the people and animals going through this in SoCal.

I have family there.

I have not been able to reach them- on the phone or physically- CHP wont let me in. They are in and north of the colonies off Bush Dr. Not even sure if they are safe or what.

F**k.

Busch is north of Kanan and that area is not in danger at this time!! Rest easy. They should be ok. PCH is closed south of Kanan!!

Default Thanks.

Yeh- tried to get out there but.....rrrrright.

Screw it. I can always load up my CR and stage off Cornell then hop up Bulldog and drop in off Castro.

I'm more concerned with the proporties along the coast by the Colony/Sarah- i.e- maybe they are/were getting stuff out of there or...

I wish someone would call me back though....

I couldn't even get to school today, the road was closed. I'm at home right now multi-tasking (Fire Coverage/STR'ng).

Thumbs up

Wow- just heard from my gal.

She's fine, power has been weird, so have other utilities.

Her folks have houses on the beach. One home that burned down was right next to one of her's. Firefighters saved it somehow. Her folks are back east and she and them were watching it go down on TV. They are staying out there as there is not much they can do so...but they are safe, thank God.

Huge sigh of relief over here.

Default First day back in the Bu

How depressing this all is. And of course I don't mean just Malibu. Malibu is small compared to what's going on in other places. This was my first day back at work.
The empty hilltop is where the castle was. I'll miss seeing it. It was a depressing day. On top of all the fire news and seeing the burn, I saw the aftermath of a 2 fatality accident after it had just occurred on PCH. A truck lost it's brakes on an 8% downhill and blasted through the intersection. Fire and a body in the road had me making a fast u-turn and getting out of there real fast. Cops and fire trucks were already there and thank heavens the fire dept was like 1 block away or another Malibu fire would have been in the works. Suffice to say, with that and all the news in general, a good cry can't be far away. Or a beer.

Some sheriff deputies should lose their jobs over that. There's a permanent restriction - no vehicles over 8000 pounds allowed. How did a monster truck get through the roadblock?

The truck didn't have to "lose it's brakes". With the combination of weight, grade, and speed the driver probably passed the point at which no brakes would ever stop him.

From KTLA web site:

According to Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Philip Brooks, the big rig driver was traveling illegally on Kanan Dume Road, which is off-limits to truck traffic. He noted that many truck drivers have been using Kanan Dume in the past several days because Malibu Canyon Road, the normal truck route, has been closed because of the brush fire in the area.

Many truck drivers! WTF weren't they stopping the trucks?

also, isn't there a gravel pit/runaway truck ramp at the bottom, or am I thinking of another road?

Yes it's there, the driver didn't use it.

Yes! It's a run-a-way truck ramp with huge signs telling drivers that it's ahead on the left. Either they can't read or they are so inexperienced the ramp scares them and they think slamming into a hillside would be better and killing people while they are at it. This happened last year too. And I've been told it has happened in the past. Shameful! What a waste! I think a professional driver would have known what to do.

Default I Love Malibu too

My wife & I were there Saturday before the fires. We rode up in Sycamore, had a great time. But the funniest part of the day was going to Neptune's Net in full lycra! Hey!... It's a biker bar ain't it? I hope things get back no "normal" real soon!
