After reading good reviews (including a good personal endorsement by ChumbaJason) and generally deciding I really like the camera, we recently bought a Panasonic DMC-FX07. Love the quality and the size. Got a nice little LowePro case that clips onto my CamelBack strap securely so it's at my fingertips when I choose to bring it.

First we tried an Olympus, figuring the dust & water resistance would be good for mtb-ing, but I was not happy with the image quality. Maybe we got a lemon on the Olympus, but the Panasonic definitely gets two thumbs up.

For point and shoot duties I have found it hard to beat Canons Elphs series cameras.

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?&storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&partNumber=676792&cm_mmc=GoogleB ase-_-Shopping-_-Technology_%3E_Digital_Cameras_-_-676792-SD1000%20SILVER&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=676792

There is a good deal on one for under $200.

I agree with Jordan. I have an Elph and it works great.

Ditto. Stick with Canon. You can't go wrong. I am a professional photographer and almost all my peers use Canon point and shoots.

Even though I only use Sony cameras both in SLR and PS. I suggest Canon- Neil uses one and all of his photos come out great.

I may look into a Cannon one day as well...

I've got a Casio Exilim.

Casios will take great pictures in bright light.

Once you go indoors, or use the flash, or go with high ISO/high shutter speeds, the photo will get very grainy. It's not that great for action stills (though the video is good).

My next point and shoot will probably be something from the Canon line.

Good luck.

Seriously though--I use the Kodak C653. It's a 6.1MP with lot's of cool features and I only paid $120 for it. It takes great pics and if it breaks, I'm not out a fortune. It's not a bad way to go.

I've got two Canon DSLR's and a Canon p&s.

Hard to beat the Canon P&S. The ELPH's are very nice, but if you don't mind a bit more size, the "A" series cameras will give you a bit more bang for your buck.

I have large hands and the ELPH models are on the tiny side for me. I feel like I'm using one of those tiny cell phones from the movie Zoolander. They do perform really well though.

I got an older p&s water resistant olympus cuz I use it also while snowboarding (accidental drops in snow with gloves or leave pocket unzipped). pretty happy with it but whatever make u get make sure you have burst mode as almost ensures you don't miss a sweet action shot and can stitch together for cool pick. u may also what something with a view finder and not just screen as sometimes in bright conditions hard to see image u want when lining up shot

Canon A560. Not a super tiny camera like the ELPH series, but it's a good camera. I put it in one of the jersey pockets, and I have become adept at reaching back and pulling it out.

I also use Sanyo Eneloop AA NiMH batteries with it, and those seem to work as advertised.

I have a Casio Exilim EX-Z750. Slightly older now, but great camera, great battery life, good controls.

I like the Exilim cameras over the Casio's Elphs. I like to have slightly more control over some settings, particularly the shutter speed. If you want straight up point and shoot then I would say probably go with the Elph's. If you want to have the ability to access some more manual controls, but still be able to point and shoot when needed then the Exilims are really nice.

There where situations to get a shot without using a flash all I needed to do was drop the shutter speed with the Exilim just a bit and I got a perfect shot. My girlfriend's Elph SD1000 didn't do as well because it forced you to use a flash (ick!) or the shot was underexposed even if you tried to (+1,+2, etc) the exposure. Don't get me wrong the Elphs are nice cameras and do take nice shots, but IMHO I like my Exilim better.

oh yeah you should check out http://www.dcresource.com/ They have great, very detailed reviews of digital cameras.
