Default My Maxxis Ignitor has an acne problem

I was looking over my bike this morning and was a bit surprised to see this.

Has this happened to anyone else? The tire is about 6 months old. It had DT Swiss sealant in it at first and then Stan's for the last few months.

I guess I'm lucky I caught it. I don't think Stan's would have sealed up that hole...

I'm interested in seeing what the inside looks like...

with Maxxis tires and sealant but have had issues with other tires.

If the fibers are exposed inside your tire (not solid rubber) then over time the Stans sealer with ruin your tire.

Talking Must be the sealant!

Everybody knows when you plug up the pores you get acne. Be interesting to see if acne creams would help this problem....

Seriously, you have a defective tire. I"m sure if you take them back to the place where you bought them, they'll exchange for another and send back to the factory. The manufacturer may even know about this as a bad run... they usually don't advertize this info to the public. Don't ride on it as it could go at any time.

but I do not think the mgr would cover the tire beacuse Stans sealant ate it up........ but who knows

I was about to change the tire anyways..since the tread is just about gone in the middle.

I just took the tire off..and weirdest thing. Those pimples are still semi-hard to the touch, like air is still inside. I'm guessing some air got in there somehow through a hole or something, and then the stan's sealed it up?

There isn't any exposed cord or anything. I have a feeling that even if one of these "popped", the tire would have still been ok.

I'll take a needle and lance it later and see what comes out

Let us all know... I run Ignitors on the back every once in a while. Have since switched to an SB8 when I'm not running Nevs front and back

I just lanced a couple. Pretty nasty stuff. It was like popping a zit. Sealant and some air oozed out of each of them.

Each little bubble seems independent of the others - meaning if you squeeze one, it doesn't inflate another.

Interesting. I run a 2.35 front and 2.1 rear Ignitor's on my SS. Keep us informed.

With such even spacing of the bubbles in your second picture, something tells me it is not the sealant but a quality problem with the tire.

I run the non-UST version tubeless with homegrown sealant. I haven’t seen that problem … yet. I’ll be keeping an eye out for that now. Thanks.

I run a UST Ignitor with a small amount of Stans sealant with no problems so far (about 2 months). I'll be looking for zits on mine from now on!

It has happened to a few tires of mine. The old formula of Stans was seperating the rubber from the trhead caseing. New Stans formula has not done anything bad to my tires yet.

I have had that happen with my last 2 Larsen TT's sealed with Stans, very scary because it could be catastrophic if and when that bubble burst.

Here is what I heard by someone in the "know":

The reason is both items involved, the Stans and the Maxxis tread. Maxxis "may" have used a slightly inferior inside rubber which when combined with Stans actually eats its way thru the interior rubber and the Stans reacts by pushing and bubbling its way thru the hole it caused.
Now this is all hearsay and any knowledge of this will be denied but again this is just something I "heard".

The best way is to alert Maxxis and let them know what has happened and immediately take that tire off!
Hope that helps.

I always wash my tires in Proactiv before I put them on the bike. I've never had any zits yet.

I just run over Jessica Simpson a few times. Solves two problems at once.

Harden The F*** Up!!

I have Ignitor's on my SS. Rode the SS yesterday and all was fine. Went to load it up in my car for tomorrow's ride and found this:

It's about the size of a golf ball!! It is the tubeless version and I am running Stan's. And mind you--this pic was taken with all the air let out of the tire.

Did anyone ever find out for certain what the exact issue was?? Will Maxxis warranty the tire?? I don't care that much. It's almost worth it to me to not have to worry about it, just curious.

I'm also wondering if Maxxis has fixed/solved the problem.

I used to work for a team which was sponsored by Maxxis and we saw that a few times...no Stan's needed. The only thing that I can say is that when we saw it the tires were due for changing anyhow.
