Two wheels on the ground
|
So i decided i was going to go ride whiting today one because i needed to ride somewhere and two i really like that park. In through the front i go and up the main one way trail and i realize there is another rider just ahead of me. After about two minutes i realize that i am riding faster than he is and i notice him wave his arm for me to come by. I thought to myself i could go past him or i could just hold my horses and keep a safe distance behind until we get to a safe place to pass. I went for option number two slowing my pace until we got the Mustard hill. Made my way up mustard and was debating to cruise the fire road or to take cactus out. Cactus it was and it was my first time, that trail is really fun. Here is where my ride got very frustrating. I had just gone from cactus to serrano cow and was planning to hit live oak then back to my car. So i was riding along and this dude literally flies past me. He decides to pass me in the worst possible section and almost caused me to crash and then just keeps going, no sorry or anything. Then i turn a shoulder and he had company. Not one but four other riders who all passed with caution and were respectful about it. As i watched them all ride off i decided i was just going to go home and shake off my dissapointment. Then my brain started working and i thought man somebody has to tell this guy that he is totally out of line. I did my best to catch up with one of his buddies and let him know how upset i was that his riding buddy was so rude and neglectful to other riders. His first words were, " Oh i know which one he is, " which means to me that this guy rides like this all the time. Then he told me that they all worked at Oakley and that they ride on lunch breaks. I will not ride there at the same time now for fear that this guy will be out running people off the trails.
Has anybody experienced this at whiting? I have only been riding for four months now and all the STR peeps are so cool, respectful and great to ride with. Its no wonder why hikers and horse riders give mtb'rs the evil eye when we have guys like this representing us. NOTE: To all who ride whiting between the hours of 11:00 to 1:00 make sure to keep an eye or ear behind you because this guy could easily ruin your ride. |

dude.....chill out...it's mountain biking, not fox hunting.....
however, next time he passes you just say " Hey, this huge mountain lion was stalking me just beyond that bend and then turn around and go the other way" that should ruin his day. ![]() |

it's common courtesy, whether it be on the trail on on the sidewalk walking you dont just knock someone over and not stop to say are you ok? or a simply sorry. Same thing applies for out in the trail...why should etiquette be thrown out the window once you hit the dirt.

commplex - we met at Foo's ride in Aliso. I am Julia's mom that's how people remember me.
Anyway I agree don't change your riding schedule due to some rude fellow. I have other names in mind rude fellow is nicer. The good thing is you will encounter more polite and nice moutain bikers - than Ahole mtbers. Yeah! Challenge the guy meet up with him and ride past him be rude back. See what he has to say about that. Stuff like that only makes you become a better mountain biker. A polite person would tell you just forget about him. BUT those people types are hard to forget. Because yes someone can get hurt apparently they don't care. Let me have him! We have his riding schedule... ![]()

Firstly, sorry to hear this happened. That kind of riding isn't cool and doesn't do mountain bikers as a trail user group any favors. But did it really ruin your ride? When I think of things that could ruin a ride, I tend to think of compound fractures, frame breakages, being dismembered by a wild animal; you know, things that would really suck. Getting passed by some tool with bad trail manners doesn't even rate in the top ten. It sounds like you enjoyed the rest of your ride, so remember that stuff. No need to dwell on the negative.

in all seriousness...mt biking has evolved too the point where there are some really fast, experienced and skilled riders out on the trails
......although i am fast........there is always someone faster and with more skills....so as an acknowledgement of their superior skills (and for my own safety) when fast riders are behind me I instinctively get the hell out of the way...... why should i slow someone down because i can't take the same trail at speed?? especially the choice single track sections.... every ride i've been on, slow people get out of the way of the fast ones behind them.... |

All the experienced and skilled rider had to do was say was "when it is safe do you mind if I pass".

First off, the guys a giant Richard. Who cares. Everyone has one, wants one, or hates one.
Next time have your combat elbow ready and carry one of these on your shoulder strap and you'd be amazed how much more respect you get; from riders and lions. I've had neither try to attack me yet with my buddy strapped on. http://www.amazon.com/Smith-Wesson-S...844899&sr=1-15 |

Two wheels on the ground
|
The main reason why i posted this semi rant was because it was at Whiting. I was only there for two hours and came in contact with a lady on a horse and two hikers both going the oposite direction that i was. At a place like whiting i ride with extreme caution because of the amount of traffic. Every person that i have ridden with here at STR has the same genuine care and concern as i do for other riders and such, i just found it odd that this person didnt.
P.S. is the saturday morning aliso ride going this saturday Foo? |

Was he riding a Spec. Stumpjumper that's a few years old?
I've had the exact same experience. But if we're talking about the same guy, he'll pass in the worst places. Squeeze by with inches to spare and never say a farking word to give you a heads up. I find almost comical that he needs to get his rocks of doing that. |

Countless times I've had a faster rider come up on me without warning and pass me. That always startles me! I don't care if another rider passes me, just give me a shout to let me know they're there and I'll move over. Just a simple trail courtesy. |

Loop'n on my Heckler
![]() |
I had a similiar event happen.....
I just started riding in January and made the Loop my home course. As out of shape as I was, I couldn't dream of speeding around the course. As unskilled as I was, I wouldn't even attempt to fly down some of the hills. On my 3rd or 4th ride I was about halfway down Morman Hill when Speed Lightning himself comes ripping by. No warning - luckily I sensed him at the last second and pulled as tight to the fence as possible. I did have a better outcome. Old Speed must have just clipped the other fence or hit a rut 'cause he got a huge case of the weebles. I saw him plant his foot and by the way it snapped back up I knew he was in for some pain. I got to the bottom and sure enough, he was off his bike and rubbing his ankle. ![]() I never wish pain upon anyone but I'm happy to see the Darwin award winner get his due.........

Don't Feel bad....must be some pencil neck jerk. One or two of the Oakley Crew needs a good kick in the butt.....Do they think they own the trail just because they work for some local corporate big house??? Maybe the guy has to wear the tight little spandex pants to secure his tiny little balls...if he has any?? I better never see this jerk try to pass me on any trail or he will face a swift kick in the ass........I always respect everyone on the trail whether Newbie or Seasoned......
