That's just crazy.
It reminds me of a time about 18 years ago in Long Beach. I was riding my cruiser home and was on the main street. I had just passed the bus stop and there was a 4' trench on the shoulder at the curb just past the stop. I looked back over my shoulder to see where the bus was and he was still parked at the stop so I ventured out into the edge of the lane and then I hear him honking at me, right on my butt. I waved him around because there was no where for me to go but into the trench and he honked some more and then raced past me so close he barely missed my handlebars. I was so scared I was shaking and on the verge of tears. When I got home I called the bus line and filed a complaint and basically was told that I shouldn't have been there. Since then I still very rarely ride my bike on the road. Be extra careful out there, it's a mad mad world ![]()

[SIZE=2]Ahh, yes, another nice thing about having a Sergeant with the CHP as a cycling buddy when riding the road.

That's when you consult an attorney, file a private suite and formal complaints with each institute; not just for the financial punishment against Metro and the PD/Sheriff, but so others know that they can NOT continue with these actions. This type of behavior is reprehensible!
OCTD hasn't honked at me, but they often seem to pass as close as possible, even when I'm in the bike lane.

wow. that story blows my mind. i hope that guy gives the bus line hell! i ride on the streets occasionally, but only when I have to. there are too many motorists that are just completely ignorant of the laws regarding bicycles. on the flip side, I always follow the letter of the law when riding on the street...no need to give people more reasons to dislike cyclists.

I am in no way defending the ignorance of that bus driver (I hate buses) but at UPS, as drivers we are trained to use our horns and lights as a means of communicating in traffic. Not an obnoxious honk, more like a friendly beep beep followed by a friendly wave of the hand, only to let you know that I am here, I see you and I want you to know I see you and I intend to pass you at a safe distance if possible. Kind of the same as using a little ding of the bell on the trails with hikers followed by a verbal greeting. UPS has very strict guidelines for safe driving. We have something called the Five Seeing Habits and a Ten Point commentary checklist, that has to be memorized verbatim. Obviously the bus drivers do not have something as good as this. Sorry you had to deal with that. Kudos to you for standing up for yourself.

Great detailed report of a bad incident-couldn't stop reading it. Sorry you and your wife were dealt with unfairly...

The cyclist should have taken the whole lane if he was in the door zone. Would have forced the bus to pass in the other lane.
The bus driver is definitely in the wrong for not giving 3 feet. |

I've had a few bad dealings with buses. It seems some go out of their way to make our riding experience less then enjoyable.
Once my ex-boss and I were out doing a ride and a bus buzzed us, literally hitting both of our handlebars. He got ahead of us, but got caught at the light. My friend (ex-boss) whose not a small guy, jumped at the chance and hauled arse up to the bus to find why the hell he did that. My friend asked him "WTH, was that all about?". The driver continued to look straight ahead and wouldn't turn to look at him, but clearly heard him as everyone on the bus was snickering. Anyways we got his name and called the police for a "hit & run", the cops refused to take a report as neither of us were injured nor could we show any damage to our bikes. My friend persued it a little further till the bus company finally asked him what he wanted. He first asked that the driver be fired. They said that wasn't going to happen and would he accept an apology instead. He said he would and the bus driver showed up at his house about a week later and apologized. He said the guy truly acted sorry. I hope he was.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think it's a bad idea to get in front of a bus, with a bus driver that doesn't know how to drive properly? I'd say there was a breakdown with all parties involved. Bus driver should know (or be taught better), cyclist should pull off to call cops/report incident, passengers should not jump off the bus and become vigilantes.
I believe in cyclists rights to share the road, but that was a poor reaction to a bad situation which escalated the matter. The cyclist is lucky the bike (and he) weren't under the bus completely. |

I wonder if I'll live long enough to see all the gas run out. Then I can see that fat SOB bus driver out on the road trying to pedal around!
My buddy 'Mike The Bike' was hit by a drunk driver at 6am last month in Pasadena. No helmet... bad head wound, 32 stitches in his cranium! Cars & bikes are a sketchy combination for sure. |
