It was in the mid 30's(at the top of the Gondola) last year during Norba.....I rode w/ a nylon pullover over my chest protector and pants over my chin guards....no problems w/ temp at all....under armour would work good to wick away sweat that will cause to get cold....

I like the ear protector things. I also have two pairs of gloves. One pair I found up there and the other I bought for 60 bucks. Well worth the money.Sold as winter biking gloves from REI. I love the wooley bully socks and Pearl Izumi makes some good winter socks that are a little lighter, not as thick. I try to find stuff that will breathe, no matter what you wear if you have a layer that doesn't, you'll be soaked in no time. Stay away from cotton. Another thing roadies do, and it works suprizingly well, is to put a paper bag or a newspaper over your chest to work as a wind barrier, this is truly amazing how well it works for the dh's. I can't stand the cold, but if it comes down to riding or not, I'll go out into the cold, even at 18 degrees.

Can't you use the paper bag as chest armor? I guess that's for roadies.

Weather update:
I just checked the weather and it's currently 3:00 PM, cloudy, with 25 mph winds, 28 degrees on top and it's only getting colder into the weekend. Snow Expected tonight and tommorrow. Rain/Snow Friday. Chance of rain/snow Sat morning with afternoon clearing. Sunday is expected to be warmer and sunny.

Ever been on dirt with a lot moisture frozen into soil? It sets solid like concrete with the frozen water acting as a cement and soil acting as an aggregate. Could make for some interesting trail conditions....

"Interesting" is a good way to put it - guess we'll just have to wait and see how ridable it is...what a wierd turn of weather though. I might have expected some cold temps, but it's been a few years since we got snow this early...

It's really wierd looking at what I'm packing for this - so much warm gear it looks like I'm going snowboarding, but then all my riding gear too - just lots of stuff...but it'll be damn sweet to sit in the hot springs while it's snowing!

Yes many times, I last year I rode both Mt Elden in Flagstaff and Thunder Mountain in Utah during the winter. Would rather ride in those conditions than the mud. Only problem is the standing water that turns to ice. I have not been on Mammoth in those conditions; my guess is the the water soaks into that kitty litter so fast it may not make much difference, wet or frozen, and will probibly make for a better/less loose ride.

My only concern [HA!] is if it winds up being a 4-6+" storm with drifts. That would seriously dampen the fun factor. On the plus side it's September and any sunny patches will definitely start melt immediately.

Ready for Antarctica,

Umm...probably not. The purpose of snowboarding goggles, is that the amber lenses prevent you from going snow blind from the snow. Unless we're riding in lots of snow, which I doubt, regular goggles are likely your best bet.

I did a DH ride in about 18-24 inches of fresh powder. Let's just say I spent most of my time going over the bars and sliding on my butt down the hill than I did riding down. Fortunately, it wasn't that bad.

I grew up in New England. My advice is to stock up on wool, see swobo.com. Also buy some Dermatone for the face and lips.
