Default GPS/Topo/Santa Ana's Question.....

Alright folks....I'm hoping one of you can help me. I have a large ride planned out in the Santa Ana's and I'd like an idea of mileage/elevation gain before hand(just for kicks). I'm hoping that one of you GPS/Geoladders/Computer Literate types can help me out.

Here's the route:
Up Blackstar to Main Divide
Across Main Divide and down Motorway
Up Maple Springs
Down Harding
Head out of Modjeska Canyon and climb the backside of Modjeska Grade.
Up Santiago Truck Trail past the Luge
Head down Rose Canyon or Cadillac.
Up Trabuco wash and then up Holy Jim
Across Main Divide and head down Westhorse
Up Trabuco
Down the wall the Blue Jay.
Down San Juan to the trailhead(where a second car will be waiting with a cooler).

So yeah.....can anyone give me a rough estimate of gain and mileage? Doesn't need to be exact.....just ballpark.

Also...if you're interested in joining the fun let me know. It'll likely go down sometime before mid-october. I'm basically just looking for a last hurrah to a good race season.

Thanks,

Brian

what for... your going to die anyway!

18.6 to bottom of motorway and 4000ft
7.3 to top of 4c and 3000ft
9.1 down harding 100ft
8.8 miles to Trabuco Road with probably less than 1000ft
18.6 up Trabuco Road Up Holy Jim over to Horstheif and 4000ft or so
29 miles to Bluejay and has to be 4000ft to 5000ft
11.4 down and 760ft

should be pretty close...

I honestly don't think it'll be THAT bad. I'm anticipating a 10-12 hour day.

Climbing that crappy, steep section of Main Divide on the way to westhorse will be the obvious lowpoint.....and climbing Trabuco won't be much of a picnic either:-)

Soo.....does anyone have the info I need?:-)

"cooler" as in body bagthat a crazy mad ride. good luck and be safe! don't know total milage but some of the trails you are linking are well posted on geoladders. I am sure you can do some "back of envelope" math to get estimate

the info was posted below...

18.6 to bottom of motorway and 4000ft
7.3 to top of 4c and 3000ft
9.1 down harding 100ft
8.8 miles to Trabuco Road with probably less than 1000ft
18.6 up Trabuco Road Up Holy Jim over to Horstheif and 4000ft or so
Up Trabuco and over to Blue Jay... Don't have a clue at this time so add it in. I have never ridden Trabuco.
11.4 BlueJay down Swan Don and 760ft I think.

should be pretty close...

Sweet, thanks for the stats. I'm confused on this part though:

"29 miles to Bluejay and has to be 4000ft to 5000ft"

Is that 29 miles and 4000ft of gain from the top or bottom of westhorse? Either way that seems to be way too high. West horse is only a few miles....and trabuco is 4-5? Then the top of Trabuco to Bluejay is only a few miles.

What am I missing here?

Thanks again!

My best estimate for you is 87.3 miles of riding and around 16,320ft of climbing.

You are insane. Please go seek help before doing this ride

Actually, I'd be really down if it wasn't so much climbing...

That's pretty close to what my internal GPS was thinking. Awesome numbers. That's alot of climbing for 80 something miles. Good stuff.

Brian,
Do you think you can get it in during sunlight hours or are you thinking of bringing a light?

The D6 took all of 11.5hrs (I think) of course that was Drew, Steve T and I. You will be going much faster, but still that is a TON of miles!!!!

I think I'm doing laundry that day.

I'll likely bring a light....given that the days are short and getting shorter!
