You can try the following combo out. I believe it'll end up being in the 1800g range.
Hope Pro II Hubs DT Swiss 5.1 Rims DT Swiss Competition Spokes I think those should hold up to abuse fairly well. On my latest wheelset build, I have Hope Pro II's laced to Stans Flow rims with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. That combo ended up being about 100g lighter (maybe 200g if we're talking tubeless ready), but I'm about 40+ pounds lighter than you. So far so good though. Although, I just remembered you already have a CK rear hub - just keep that and use a Hope Pro II up front for versatility (20mm & 9mm QR). |

So if it's wheels I'd like to recomend the Easton Havoc
http://www.eastonbike.com/PRODUCTS/W..._am_havoc.html I have a set & they rock. They are very light & strong. The Rear hub sounds great. The front will switch from QR to 20 mm & comes with the QR axle. I bash the hell out of mine & wish I had put them on my bike for Noble this weekend. The set I run on my hard tail aren't really for that kind of abuse. I'm over 200lbs (just!!!) with all my gear so I need strong wheels too. If you buy purple Chris King Hubs & DT rims, you are going to have to buy a Turner & be like every bub else!!! Next stop Homerdom. Not a bad place to be I guess. Damn I wish I had more money.

Not sure on weight, though... For me, I'd much rather have a burlier wheelset for rides like Noble, and a lighter wheelset for stuff like Counting Coup and other training/long rides. The reason I say that for Noble is because the last half is pretty chunky in sections. That's why I heft that bike up all the hills; much rather have the suspension and burliness for the DHs!! The Crossmax SX is 1920g. Built to be burly, but low weight for it's "class". Then there is the ST: light and stiff. 1570g. DT Swiss has a XC wheelset also, but it doesn't list weight. Their FR/Trail wheelset is 1974g. You don't have to go on the trip RIGHT NOW. Geez. You do get vacation, right? ![]() |

When I said I had to work, I was referring to the "Closing day at Mammoth" suggestion. I'm saving my vacation for next year. When I take time off for Moab, I'm taking extra time and plan on hitting a few places on the way back.

heres my 2 cents doug. i have both the 819's and 823's the 823's are 10 mm bolt thru and make the rear of the bike more ridged and will handle alot more abuse then the 819's . if you go banging thru rock gardens with abandon and are thinking about taking flight keep your 823's take your time going up and enjoy the downs. if your going to pick clean lines and want less rotational wieght plus tuning your wheels more the 819's are good. but at 220lbs you might think twice about a lighter wheelset. save the money and get the frame you want.

The CrossMax SX is the replacement for the XL. I don't remember all of Mavic's claims, but I think they claim the SX wheels are 17% stiffer.

Get some I9's on the DT5.1. Light, strong and no bling if you go all black. I've been on mine over a year with no issues to report. The stiffness and strong engagement is what you need at your weight - I go a good 215-200 myself.
They are super easy to maintain yourself and you get extra spokes with the wheels. You can tension and remove spokes with a standard spoke wrench.

Put the cash in a 6 month CD so your wife can't touch it. That will give you time to figure out exactly what you want to do. Then you'll have an extra $25 or so (after taxes) to do whatever you want with (see ben's suggestion of buying beer...).

Because of the success of the XL, that's probably exactly why they say the SX is its replacement. Saying that surely adds credibility to the SX. We'll just have to wait and see if they are as good.

You will SO notice a pound of weight off your wheels. I went from a pair of Bontrager Selects to a set of Spinergys (the XC ones) and the difference is HUGE. Even with stickier tires on the Spinergys they just make the bike feel like it is jumping out from under me when I hammer it. It is the only thing I have ever changed on a bike or motorcycle (and I've changed a few things) that has made such a huge difference. Best 600~ I have ever spent by a long shot. Sounds like you need something more burly, but definitely go with wheels. Nice wheels are so cool. Good luck and post pics!

I'm 99.99% sure I'm going to go with Easton Havoc's. They get 4.80 chilis out of 5 on MTBR, the front hub converts from QR to 20mm and they are approx 1.25 lbs lighter than my current set-up.
Best of all, I can convert and run my current wheelset to use on my Haro X7 so they won't just be sitting in my garage collecting dust. I thought about Mavic Crossmax's, but I like the idea of being able to run QR or thru-axle on the Easton's.

The SX is also convertible. In the advertisement I recently saw, it said QR adapters are available, but from what I've seen, they're included with the wheel-set.

Have you considered the DT Swiss EX 1750 wheelset?
QR or 20mm convertible, 1750 grams, welded and machined, double butted and bladed spokes. http://www.dtswiss.com/index.asp?fus...kedetail&id=11 |

From what we saw on the Mavic site, only the Crossmax SX, Deemax and Deetraks have thru axle hubs and we didn't see any conversion kits. I'm excited about the SX's. I swapped the TALAS for a Marz All Mountain SL1. They are over a pound lighter than my current wheels and I'm going tubeless, so that'll shave a bit more weight. ![]()
