Default Affordable Health Insurance

Several people have mentioned that they do not have health insurance. You might want to look into this. Be sure to read the fine print but it might be an option for some of you.
I found this information on the IMBA site. I'm not affiliated with Adventure Advocates, but I do advocate that if at all possible medical insurance for MTBer's is a good idea!

Nice info.

Everyone should try to at least carry an inexpensive, high deductible policy just for the catastrophic emergencies. There are quite a few policies out there that would only set you back the price of a weekend's drinking or a set of tires for your rig each month.

The expensive policies typically are due to all the bells and whistles, and low deductibles.

When I was struggling with a new business way back when; I at least always kept a policy in place that was just my backup for the untimely sudden mtb stop, and carried a $5,000.00 deductible. Sounds like a high deductible, but in the case of a lengthy ICU stay, it could save you tens of thousands of dollars.

My last big dumb move cost me around $6,500.00 out of pocket, but without insurance would have been over $40,000.00.

Save your pocket change and find an inexpensive, basic policy.

Have fun and stay safe on the trails

My gramps has a Blue Cross plan that costs only $32.00/month, and the ded is only $1,860.00, and it's pretty comprehensive, it's only for 65+ though. He's used it once in almost 2 years, so the cost is WELL worth it.

+1

One decent hospital stay can wipe you out financially if you're not insured. I always argue that you can't affort NOT to have insurance today. With a large deductable, coverage is very affordable.

Indeed. Before we were married, my wife had a cheap Blue Cross plan with a $2000 deductible. I think it only cost us $40/month back in 2004. Now she's freeloading off of my insurance...I mean, she's a full time student. Yeah, that's it.

ever notice the bikes these uninsured guys are riding? The last guy that told me he didn't have med insurance was rolling a nice Intense.

No health insurance = instant bankrupt when you get hurt. And out of all the fund raising events I've been a part of (and it's been alot) only once did the money really go to pay for health care. And that guy did have insurance. We raised over 20K and make the check out to the place doing his PT.

I've seen this dozens of times. Folks who complain about the "health care crisis" and say they can't afford insurance because it is too expensive. Then they tell me what a great time they had at last night's laker game where they had dinner a a few beers.

Total BS.

Don't count on bankruptcy any longer either. With the new laws it's getting next to impossible to file. You'll be expected to carry a debt for 20 years or more.
