I haven't thought about my old bikes in a long long time...takes me back to jumping off things with my old bmx and bending handlebars, gooseneck stems that never seemed to hold the handlebars in place correctly, epic rides around town with my friends...freedom to roam.
had 2 bmx bikes early, one was a pos Free Spirit or something, the other i bought from a friend, it was probabaly a late 70's early 80's black Laguna. i just remember how sweet that bike was and how it brought a little bit of California cool to my rural Pennsylvania childhood. when was the last time you rented Rad? i think it might be time... mountainbikes like most started with a POS murray or something. went to a Trek 930 Single Track (True Temper OX comp II tubing), rode that thing everywhere. i rode that bike all through college. converted it into a city bike and rode it for years around philly long after it stopped being a useful mtbike. built a bike up from an access frame ordered from supergo in 97. put on all the best components i could afford. totally psyched to have the sweet manitou 80mm travel elastomer forks... took a bit of break when i moved to LA because the riding here is so different from what i grew up doing, but now back in full force on my Heckler...

First bike was some ugly blue bomber Pee Wee Herman looking thing. I think it had solid tires.
Next was a Columbia Sting Ray rip-off with banana seat and stick shift. Then it was some dorky Raleigh hand-me-down from my grandfather. Definitely an old man's bike, but it got me around. Finally I got my first cool bike, a Schwinn Varsity 10-speed. I think those bikes weighed close to 40 pounds. First serious bike that I bought for myself was an early 80s Univega Supra Sport, a mid-level road bike. Eventually stolen by my own brother. After moving from the east coast to SoCal in 89, a friend was kind enough to donate to me a beat up low-end Nishiki cruiser. I put a lot of miles on that bike commuting to work across the San Fernando Valley. Got into mountain biking in the early 90s. My list of bikes since then: 92 Specialized Stumpjumper - With "Future Shock", a Specialized branded Rock Shox Mag 21. Sweet Tange Prestige frame. Recently converted to a fixed-gear around town bike and getting lots of use. 97 Litespeed Ocoee - Stolen off the roof of my car in Las Vegas sometime in the spring of 2000. 99 Cannondale - Helen's Race Team CAAD4 frame with full Dura-Ace. Pretty dated now, but it's still my primary road bike. 00 Seven Sola (full-custom titanium) - Major upgrade thanks to a nice homeowner's insurance payout for the stolen Litespeed. Since I got the 29er bug, this beautiful bike now spends most of its time just hanging in the garage. It's my loaner. Sad. 04 Dean custom steel 29er SS - Rigid, of course. Rode it exclusively for a little over a year. Now I ride it less than 50% of the time. 06 Niner Air 9 - Fully-rigid. Currently my main ride. |

My first true mtb was a '96 full rigid Novara from REI. Gave that to my dad. He still rides it to the gym everyday. I think every gear skips on it except for one...
When I went to college in '01, I bought a GT Avalanche with Avid BB7's up front!! Judy shock baby. Just sold that... Stopped riding becuase of the POP (Power of Pu$$Y) from 2003-2006. Caught the bug hard and bought a 2006 Mongoose Teocali. (For Sale by the Way) Then I realized how much I love 29ers and started SSing mostly. Got a Kona Unit 29er (Didn't last long) in March 2007. Traded her in and got the Niner SIR9 which is my daily rider. More bikes to come!!! ![]() |

Some great stories out there, here's mine. When I was young my parents bought me a HUFFY POS for Christmas. Is it me but do a lot of people start on these bikes. Anyways, that bike was cool, it even came with a built in radio.
Then during middle school, I started getting into bodyboarding and volleyball and lost interest in bikes. Then I went to high school, and one day my cousin brought me along on a trip to Mammoth Mt. I saw a guy riding a Specialized Enduro and it really caught my attention. Soon all the camping trips to the mountains and all the mountain bikers I saw, convinced me to get a mountain bike. Later I bought an 04 Iron Horse Rogue in late 2003. I've been riding that since. Recently, me and my friend have been riding a lot of trails. I joined STR and my love of mountain biking was rejuvinated. I went to The Path bike shop on its major sale day last weekend with the intent of demoing bikes. Surprisingly, I bought an 07 Kona Dawg Primo. I haven't ridden it yet on any trails, but will soon.

Lets see:1. the ol' green Huffy, banna seat special. Probably got more air on that than anything since. then came the beater bikes: 2. AMF roadmaster 3. Columbia something or other, the tank for getting around the University. 4. Schwinn Traveller the racing (road) stable followed: 5. Bennotto 6. Bottecchia - awesome frame 7. Basso 8. GT - another great frame, climbing and descending 9. Cannondale Cadd 4 finally took the mtb plunge: 10. K2 Zed 3.0 Competition HT with upgrades to suspension and shifting 11. Felt Virtual 3 to be continued, hmm... Kona, Santa Cruz, Rocky Mtn, just cannot decide. ![]() |

76' Big Wheel - Wore a hole through wheel powersliding
82' Raleigh BMX - Freedom on wheels! 86' Sears Roadmaster Road bike - Started road biking, but converted into a crossbike when I discovered dirt! 90' Trek 830 - My first real mountain bike and only complete bike I ever got. 92' Cannondale beast of the east - Bought from my friend when he upgraded to a Klein. It climbs like an escalator. Bare aluminum frame converted into a Franken Time trial bike with switchblade forks until it got stolen in Northern California. The only road bike I will ever ride. 96' Parkpre Tange prestige ultralight - 3.8lb steel. Built up with spare parts and sold to a friend to get him started. 97' Specialized Hotrock - 24" Kids mountain bike. Employee purchase of a clearance bike for my sister. I rebuilt the wheels on alu hubs and lightened some parts but frame was too small. Sitting around for my 10 month old kid to grow into it. 98' Fisher Procaliber OCLV - Light, but dead feeling. Climbs well, but skittish around curves. Built up and sold to my boss. I might buy it back from him one day. 00' Proflex 3000 - circa 98' my first full suspension frame, built up and sold at swap meet. 02' Rhygin rasta frame - circa 97' 3lb steel frame. Living its life as my 1x9 hardtail. 04' GT I-drive - cracked and bandaided, tired, but still going strong. Soon to be retired when I find a good deal on a replacement frame. 04' Access Frame with XT components - A hardtail for the wife on the street, since she prefers her proflex, it's now for sale. All my bikes are pieced together and none of the frames cost me more than $200 |

I had a big wheel with the orange body and yellow seat, black tires. I was so cool!
Then my first bikes my dad built. Then we upgraded and my dad bought me bikes at Pep Boys. Mountain Bikes 1) Mongoose Tyax/O6 2) IronHorse Azure 07 Next bike - I'll build Next Next bike - Ironhorse DH with a pink fork @ The Path waiting for me. My list is pretty short too
![]() Growing up I got a few random BMX bikes as a kid. They were all stolen by the local druggy kids. Most of them were just tossed in the lake by my house. Hooray humanity! Then I believe xmas 1985, my parents gave me a custom Greg Hill BMX w/ black mags an added front break (hey, I was still small), two piece handlebars, slightly oversized front ring and rear coaster brake removed. Needless to say, I was the cool $%@% on the block with that thing. It was soo incredibly too big for me. Believe it or not, I rode that thing until I was 16! I finally bought a sweet Torker to replace it, trading it into a shady shop that "accidently" burnt down weeks later, taking my precious with it. I still wish I had never gotten rid of it ![]() A few years ago, I picked up random cheap mountain bike from Costco. I rode it a few times and lost the drive (having the right friends to ride with helps). Earlier this year, after quitting my job of 9 years and giving a big eff off to the corporate world, I threw down some cash for a 2006 Giant Trance 2 on clearance. I've really only been riding it since mid May...and it has progressed with me a lot in that time. ![]() |
