OT: Reb Bull Air Race San Diego

I saw one televised a recently from Brazil where they had one million spectators lining the beaches around the 'course'. Looks like a very exciting event to watch in person. They use a head-to-head elimination format so you get to see them race several times.

Cheers to Red Bull for bringing another extreme sport to the forefront instead of the same old stick and ball stuff.

I've hit the Red Bull Air Races for the last two years held in San Fran that were in conjunction w/ Navy Fleet Week. Even w/ the Blue Angeles it hasn't been overly packed like other countries, so I'm interested to see what the turnout in SD will be like. It's kinda like 3-D autocross for acro planes. I've kept tabs on it since I know the mechanic of the top pilot. They changed the format this year to mimic ET bracket racing to make it more interesting & longer (i.e. two pilots compete against each other to advance, unlike the previous years where pilot w/ the fastest overall times won). It's pretty cool to watch at least for me. Event schedule and tickets are on their website. You could find places to watch for free if you're a cheap a$$, but likely not w/ the best views.

I have been TiVoing this since the season started and its pretty cool. This year was the first time I hear of it. I was gonna go with a group of friends but with the risk of bad weather I opted out. It should be fun to watch but I'll wait for it to air in a few weeks on TV. I haven't seen the Reno race yet but I hear they had 3 crashes in 4 days or something. That has to be a horrible thing to watch. Little piece of carbon fiber going 200+ MPH into the ground or water.

The best seats in the house today were free on Coronado Island at Centennial Park. Just be sure to arrive early tomorrow for parking, unless you bring your bike w/ you.
