I'd rather be climbing...

Definitely a newb here (thanks, Waldo for introducing me) but not a lurker--by choice, at least. *Life* just gets in the way of fun sometimes.

I've been out on a few rides with you STR folks and--without exception--everyone's been damn nice. I rode up to the courthouse parking lot of the Fully Loop a few weeks ago not knowing a single one of you there. I spotted the first person with an STR jersey (PainFreak), said hi, and within 5 minutes had been introduced to about 10 other folks. Since that Thursday a few weeks ago, I have not been out on a single ride where I haven't run into SOMEone from this site. Heck, two people even apologized to ME for not introducing themselves first. Where else can you get that???

Though, I was called a "hammerhead" by a few folks and heard the terms "hucking" & "VQ" many a time. Still have no clue what any of them mean or if "hammerhead" is a compliment or insult?!

I just smiled and nodded. Better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Is there some sort of thesaurus for STR newbs? I need to brush up on the lingo apparently.

wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that was just about the best thread i have read since i joined this site. i occasionally post things but i too am a "lurker" and that is because i dont ride alot with more important commitments ( school, take care of two kids during the day and work at night, ,and of couse wife who i barely see) but damn dino that makes me feel more welcome than i have ever felt here and one of the reasons i dont post that often and now for sure i want to ride more and especially w/ u. I live right next door to chaos(rodel) and he has become a very good friend and riding buddy and he is the one who turned me on to this site, and i feel like i have always been on the outside edge of this group of people, besides rodel, who all seem like a really nice bunch of guys and ladies. but i just finished reading your thread and damn thanks for taking the time to make us lurkers feel more at home on this site i will definitely pm you the next time i ride up in your area

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately for me, I can already think of (1,247) STR members who are CONVINCED I paid you to say that stuff! Who cares what they think!

I have been wanting to write this thread for some time! At one point, we were all NEWBS/LURKERS! As the saying goes, "a journey of 1,000 miles begins with ONE step!" Dino's translation: show-up to ONE ride... start posting.... make yourself known to the group--- 1,000 good times will be yours if you take that ONE step! Trust me!

As for sending me a PM "next time" you are in my area- PM me to join you in your area! Oaks? Whiting? Aliso? San Juan? I will bring some friends!

Last thing, if my next bike in NOT an Iron Horse, the stickers will most likely read SOCOM or UZZI! Can't believe I said that!

You got admit, this is as close to an Iron Horse as you can get, without the name!

Dino / Everyone,

Thanks for this great post. I’m trying not to be a lurker. I’d known about the STR website for quite a while, but first actually met / road with people at the demo ride a couple of months back. I was VERY impressed with everyone I met. I instantly had a “good vibe”, something that doesn’t always happen when you meet a group. Anyway, when I got home from the demo ride I joined the community. Like a lot of people (I think?), I had, and still do, spend time over on MTBR. I think that is a great site as well, even with the occasional bashing, etc. Of course MTBR is a larger demographic as it is not SoCal specific. I’ve used that site to hook up with others when I’ve traveled to other states, etc. STR is great, and I find myself spending more time here, because it is (more) local. It is definitely, more of an OC / SD group.

I’m from the Culver City / WLA area, but I do have some friends that live down in the OC. In the past we’d split it up. One weekend I’d head down, and the next they’d head up. So.... I am very much looking forward to riding with the STR’s again – soon.

In fact, I’m absolutely itching to get on the bike (and hook up for a ride), but after more than 15 years without an injury (and almost 22 years of riding), 3 weeks after meeting many of you at the demo ride, I broke my collar bone. In another week or so I should be cleared for getting on the road bike (less impact to the upper body), and then back on the MTB. Hey, by then maybe it will of cooled off a bit?

Anyway, I guess that was almost more of an introduction, but I did want to agree with Dino’s statement, “What makes STR "special" is NOT the biking. It is the collection of (like-minded, good hearted, interesting, honest and hard working) members who make this site so special.”.

See you on the trails (soon!).

I agree with what all the other folks have said. There is a fun, easy-going vibe here. My family and I have certainly enjoyed it.
Dino- we have taken the BIG RIG out to Turnbull on the 7th Ave loop(I think- we found out we didn't really know where the heck we were) We may have to hook up with you so you can show us around out there.

Talking Professional Lurker

Thanks for the thread Dino, and thanks for the reminder. I NEED to give turnbull a run. PMs should be arriving in a bit. I am a professional lurker, I almost always have STR up at work, but the office frowns on people writing forum responses every 10 min

So i usually just read, laugh and remember all the good times, and great rides. And i Love drooling over the bike porn! And i saw a bunch of the newbs and lurkers on the tail end of the newb ride on sunday. I was in the pack of three going the the other way just past the jungle. It is amazing to see the pull that str has, to bring that many people out in surface of the sun temps. But i know that not everyone on that ride posts, but they show up.
it just takes some time to get something interesting to say! Unlike some of the more....uh gifted posters on here, most lurkers cant spend 9 posts saying pretty much nothing

Thank you to everyone who posted. A special thanks must be given to Justspin, epicriderat, konadupee, Tedroy, UzziBoy and VTVic for joining the fun. Your participation is most appreciated.

If you are a Newb/Lurker- I have added (2) recommendations to my original post. You may want to read them. In my opinion- two very simple and painless ways for (you) to participate...

For those members interested in giving Turnbull a shot- I had already planned on hosting a ride either the last Sunday of September or in early October. I will keep everyone posted!

Good stuff Dino,

I was out all weekend from the boards because when I am off work I don't want to be in front a computer. First things first sorry I was not able to make the Terijas creek ride with you guys. I got back from Hollywood that morning at 330AM and it was hot as hell and I had a small case of Dinoitis (aka Pussitis). The second thing I am a in shape fat guy.

I just joined here last week, in the hopes of finding other people to ride with, as most of my friends who say they are going to start riding never do.
Part of my concern was that I tend to have issues with hill climbing and I don't want to slow anyone down. I told myself I would train for the hills before I tried to ride with any of you. But after reading this it looks like I might not have to worry about it as much. When you ride Turnbull next time let me know, I'll be there. (but man those hills are a bitch there!!) I'd also love to do a ride in the Santa Monica Mountains sometime and check out the old MASH set. Have any of you been?
Oh yeah - my new Iron Horse MKIII Comp should be here by then!!
