Just keep buying more bikes and upgrading those bikes till you can't afford to eat.

u can do that while u ride!! the problem for many people (not just u Brian) is that we dont push our selves a little over our limit and try to ride more often than the normal. We get lazy and we push it aside!! I'm as guilty as the next guy so thats why i point it out!! I use it as motivation when i do. Take it from me It helps b/c I ride more now than years back. and I eat better too. My problem is that I'm big bone so cant loose too much fat!! ohh yeah and I like beer!! muhahahaahaahahaaa!!

what's funny about this whole riding thing is that you get stronger, your stamina gets better, and you notice that you're having to push bigger gears now because you're not getting tired. So it's a great cycle, you suffer, you get stronger and you push harder...it's like reward punishment!

What I dont really share with folks (only my wife) is that the biggest factor(s) in me getting motivated into being active again was that I my blood test came back pretty alarming. My cholesterol was high, my blood sugar was high I was over weight (normally 170-175) at a not so healthy weight of 195

My wife put me on a strict regiment of oatmeal, we cut down on our red meat intake drastically to maybe 2 meals a week. Cut down on fatty things and refined sugar. I'm scheduled to go in for my blood work at the end of this month to check on my progress. I'm hoping it'll be impressive

But on the flip side I am very happy to report that i stood on my scale this morning to weigh myself and found that I am down to 185!!!! Friggin 10lbs!!!! I was so stoked; exercising is effective our family went from not being active to walking 3 times a week through Wood Canyon, me riding 3 days a week I never felt better considering there's no more smoking either for me.

Anyway, i wanted to share w/ my STR family my progress and joy!
Great job. My situation was similar only my hiatus was because I broke my wrist (3 years ago). It was my 1st broken bone and I didn't know how to deal with being inactive. I ended up with 3 injuries in 3 years and ended up putting way too many pounds. I also ate too much salt (prepared foods while convalescing) and caffeine (Diet Soda). I ended up with high cholesterol and high blood pressure and had a number of heart episodes which scared the bejesus out out of me. 3 years later I have cut down on the sodium and caffeine, cut my portions by 2/3 (ouch, really hard when you love to eat), lost 45 pounds and no longer have to take blood pressure medication.

All I can say is, the older you get, the easier it is to lose your fitness and the harder it is to get it back. Once you have it, it is a 6 day a week effort to keep it.

Oh, I forgot add, one day you turn 50 and you realize that everything changes, especially the rules. My friend turned me on to this book which really opened my eyes.

Before you worry about whipping out a cookbook and spending a ton of money making elaborate meals just practice some common sense. Ding Dongs bad, chicken breasts good. If you are forced to eat out for lunch at work, get the chicken sandwich plain and only eat half the bun, no fries and water or tea. You can still eat fairly healthy even if you have to eat fast food now and then. Start eating oatmeal for breakfast in the morning. It takes all of about 2 minutes to make it and it will help get your metabolism going. I also suggest drinking one bottle of water with your oatmeal to help aid your metabolism. You want to lose the same amount of weight that I did this year so trust me this all works but you have to stick with it and the first month is the hardest. Eliminate white breads and white rice from your diet and replace them with whole wheat options. Try and remove as much if not all the sugar from your diet as well for a while. Although alot of the food I made during my dieting was boring it worked. I stocked up on chicken breasts and would make 10 at a time. I would eat a chicken breast for dinner with a small salad almost every night with very little dressing and if I marinated the chicken it was with something with no sugar or fat but most of the time I just ate it plain. Afterall it takes sacrifice to make this happen right. Stop drinking soda also, this is a personal weakness of mine because I love diet coke but cutting it out helped. There is nothing wrong with snacking just choose the right snacks. Clif Bar, handfull of Trail Mix (not a whole bag), chicken breast, fruits and veggies, etc... The other tough part about eating right isnt just food choices but portions. Shrinking your stomach on the inside takes some time, you will be hungry and you will wanna eat but you need to space out more food throughout the day to control that and trust me after a month or so itll be a piece of cake. Here is kinda the typical meals I would eat when I was losing weight.

Breakfast
Option one - Oatmeal and bottle of water
Option two – 3 scrambled egg whites and bottle of water
Option three – Small bowl of Special K cereal with FF milk and bottle of water

Lunch
One – chicken sandwich plain on whole wheat and water
Two – turkey or ham sandwich with ketchup or mustard on whole wheat and water
Three – small chicken salad with FF cheese, FF ranch, cucumbers, carrots and water

Snacks
Clif bar
Trail Mix
Apples
Carrots
Popcorn no butter
Slim fast shakes (rarely but these are more of a meal replacement because of calorie count)

Dinner
One - Chicken or fish with a small salad
Two - 1 cup of any sort of pasta I could find with a chicken breast and light marinara sauce
Three - 3 scrambled egg whites and wheat toast (I like breakfast at dinner at times)

I always drank a good amount of water throughout the day. Basically, if my pee was yellow I drank more water until it was clear then I knew I was hydrated pretty well.

This is what worked for me so I can’t say it’s the best route for others. I put notes in my fridge and on the mirror in my bathroom that would help motivate me to lose weight. They would say either things like DIET or FATASS or 50lbs or whatever I felt was gonna work that week.

The magic to weight lose is simple, burn more calories than you take in. Start paying attention to how many calories are in the food you eat and if you are like me you may stop craving things simply because you know how much more effort it is going to take to work that HO HO off.

The key to all of this though is exercise. I know you are busy and work a lot of overtime but you can make the time. Get up before work and do some at home exercises. Get in a pattern of not plopping down at the PC when you get off work and get on your bike even if its riding a couple miles on the road. For most people once you sit down and relax you don’t get motivated to get back up. As you start to lose weight and get back into riding and burning more calories you can adjust what you are eating but for now, its all about sacrifice. The weight didn’t go on overnight so don’t expect it to go away overnight, you will just frustrate yourself. Try and stop for an extra 5 seconds before you put anything into your mouth and think, is this what I should be eating. Trust me it will get easier… Good luck everyone here is always willing to help you and anyone else in need. I cant thank those on here who helped me this year enough.

Since I seem to be writing a novel today… something that really helped me notice a significant difference was cross training. When I started walking then jogging then running it helped my biking out tremendously and fitness level. The days I wouldn’t ride I walked a few miles outside or on the treadmill. Eventually I got stronger and started jogging, etc… Shocking your body like that with different exercises is key. Another great thing about walking is that its great for fat burning and its as simple as walking out your front door with your MP3 player armed.

Good luck my friend!

Thumbs up Great Job

Foo - A few months ago Jordan posted before and after pictures of himself...They were truely motivating...Thank you (<----click here)

Today, your story is another form of motivation for me. I'm glad your seeing results now, it sure makes all the hard work easier..Good Job on the no smoking...The no urge thing seems to be a theme for several of us...(must be the hills) I'm smoke free since July 3rd 2007..The exercise thing is harder to do, but am learning to make time for myself and also enjoy outside activities with the family. Nothing like family bike rides...

What your doing now for yourself and your family will keep your kids healthy, teach them now to be active and hopefully that will be the lifestyle they choose for the rest of their lives

Keep up the good work! Kudos to your wife & kids too!

Foofighter - I do 7 Eleven runs with my girls once in a while. That would be really hard to give up. I'd rather keep pushing my bike up steep hills to burn off the junk food.

Candy I love Candy - Is that bad for you? I thought it was only bad for my girls.

Well we don't drink sodas is that a healthy diet?

Necross why would you want to cook more at home? That's insane! Just buy subway. Haven't you read the stories of people that lost 50 pounds eating at subway.

Necorss if you eat your food with hot chile it increases your metabolism and it makes you lose weight. Advice from a Mexican hahaha!

On a serious note congrats to all that quit smoking and Foofighter you have inspired me to keep riding more. I'll see you @ Aliso let's plan on next sat morning let me know if your riding.

Ths is soo true... I have been pretty much off the bike for 2 weeks with broken toes and hit up aliso yesterday... Man talk about going backwards... Thank god I brought gears there is no way I could have gotten the SS up Cholla. I almost died on the rip... Bottom line Keep pedaling every chance you get, and if you don't have a chance, make the time or suffer

holy crap Jordan, you did a fantastic job of shedding those LBS! the beauty of all this is that you're doing it for yourself and like surlygal said you're setting a good example for your kids (if you have a family) and that was part of my motivation too. I didnt want my kids to see that all mom and dad did was sit and watch tv. Now they are all excited to go on hikes and we even got one of my riding buddy (alan) to get his wife and kids to go on walks with us. This health thing is contagious I tell ya, especially when you're amongst other similar minded people (STR) it only helps/pushes you to keep moving in the same direction.

Ezzyride, we will definitely keep you posted on our next AV ride.
Jordan, you are a testament to being focused working towards your goal
Surlygal, it's members like you that i look up to when i read your RR on Beek's ride. You indirectly motivated me!
Denmother, it's true that when you get older it just takes that much longer to get fit and stay fit, but you showed yourself and everyone what a little preserverance can do! If I can be 1/2 as fit as you or Gregg at your biological age i would be one very happy guy!
