I converted to clipless about 2 months ago after my LBS told me about them. For me I really feel that being clipped in helps ME with climbing hills.

Now, I have fallen over a few times because of not being used to being clipped in.... but i now feel very comfortable using them.

I have Shimano pedals and shoes... they have a big enough platform that i can use them without the clipless shoes if needed.

I agree, I started on a HT with platforms and that teaches you a lot. When I see newbies on FS rigs with clipless, I know they're just making things harder on themselves.

I have to admit after being clipless for a couple years the whole platform thing makes me really miss that false sense of security. I also don't like the meat clever marks on my shins either.

Back...oh...20+ something years ago, I used to take either the Hutch or the Suntour "bear trap" pedals and file them until they were deathly pointy, deep, and sharp. You take those into your shin a few times, and you learn not to do that anymore! I think it took a long time for the dents in my shins to mostly go away. I can't remember the last time I took a pedal into the shin.

Chainrings into calves are a different story (hence the play bike and DH bike have E13 bash guards).

Default Shimano SPDs

I use Shimano SPDs with plastic cages for all applications, but particularly for dh and mtx. I prefer the plastic because my bike has a low bb and plastic "gives" better in a pedal check.

There is a good segment in the video called 'Fundamentals' where Steve Peat and Neil Donaghue discuss their preferences (clips and flats, respectively).

Sam Hill and the Aussies make a strong case for flats where Peaty and Nico V. make a convincing case for clips.

Just preference.

Really?? I like to show up to newbie rides with all 5 of my bikes on the roof rack and then mock the newbs when I start using the "Eenie-meenie-miney-moe" method to select which bike I'll ride.

Just kidding.

I always try to remember that I was there once too. I was once the fat boy on the $400 Trek HT wondering what the heck I got myself into. Now I'm the slightly less fat boy on the high dollar Yeti 575 wondering what the heck I got myself into.

I've used both. I started out using platforms for years, but tried clipless a few times. Due to an injury I sustained on my right angke while in a car accident, I was never able to clip out as easily on my right foot as I was on my left foot. If I could clip out easily enough on my right foot, then I would regularly "pop out" of my pedals. It didn't matter what pedals i was using, or how I adjusted them, things were never set up quite right. So, I've decided to stick with platforms.

The one thing about the time I ran clipless pedals, though, is it tought me better techniques, and I've applied them to platforms.

I remember those Hutch pedals!! They would tear your shins to hamburger meat!

hey, where's the toe clip option?

seriously? no. just crank bros products (candys, eggs, quattros) on all of the bikes.

This would be the dft that you speak of. Powergrips may not be for everyone but they seem to work for him just fine. He lets his riding do the talking.

It was hot, so he was prolly wearing his "signature" sleeveless green shirt.

Ya, I couldn't believe the stuff he was hitting. Nicest guy you ever wanted to meet too. He started chatting up our group of posers at TW and was super cool.
