ALTADENA, Aug. 26, 2007 (CNS) - A 12-acre brush fire that broke out Sunday in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains above Altadena was expected to be fully contained by early evening, fire officials said. About two dozen hikers were evacuated from a nearby campground after the fire broke out around 1:20 p.m. near North Lake Avenue and East Loma Alta Drive, said Captain Mike Brown of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The area is heavily used by hikers heading to trails in the Angeles National Forest in the Flores Canyon area. The fire spread up a steep hill, devouring 12 acres, Brown said. Although the Southland has been under wildfire warnings for most of the summer because of hot and dry conditions, today the weather was mild and muggy, slowing the spread of the flames. Aircraft dropping flame retardant also helped firefighters get the upper hand. Officials from the Altadena Sheriff's station blocked roads at Lake Avenue, Mount Curve Avenue, Loma Alta Drive and Marengo Avenue, said Lt. Carrie Stuart. "We're just blocking streets so the fire department can get in there," she said. The cause of the fire was under investigation, Brown said. "They should have a cause for it soon," she said. "I thought I saw some lightning up there, so maybe that's it." |

Hey that's what I saw then! I rode El Prieto, started around 4pm up. There were a bunch of helicopters going back and forth, and I figured it was a fire somewhere.
Sounds like they did a great job stamping it down though! And it sounds like the weather helped too. |
