I'm a little curious about the weight. I know people build their XCL's for a variety of purposes and at a lot of different weight ranges. Is that weight measured by your bathroom scale or a high tech digital? What sort of choices did you make in terms of strength vs weight? I'm asking because I"m really hoping to be buying that same bike in the next few months. My riding is definitely XC-oriented and I don't seem myself doing any drops like your vid (at least not intentionally), so I might like to try a lighter build.

thank you sir,

weight was measured with both a digital scale at Adrenaline and a regular hang scale at Chumba. The XCL feels like a very versatile bike. As far as components I just stuck with the Chumba build kit and threw on a bashguard. I like the fact that it came with lock on grips. Why you ask? because...

I went with strength over weight because, the Pike coil is phenomenal. The DHX air still needs tuning. it rolls very straight over super bumpy stuff. Why even on todays ride I tried to unclip out my shoes but couldnt and this was while going down hill. Long story short, I rolled over a fair size ditch at an angle you would swear I was trying to hit a berm the bike rolled right over it. Then I fell 20 feet after-Luckily no one was around to see it. Although I can just be a liar, youll only know if you ride yourself.

Even with an RP23 it would take the drop I did just fine. The Chumba build kit is more heavy duty stuff I guess, so it wouldnt be hard in any way to build something Under 30 with good parts. Did you go to the ride today? Next time I see you, I'll let you test Mine out. It really doesnt pedal at all like it weighs.

Yup, after today's ride my bike is caked with a layer of sand and mud.

thanks!

Yes it was, I was the only Chumba there. haha did you see it at the end with all the sand and stuff sticking to it? When I first got there the bike had never touched gravel before.

Quite a few people got to pedal my bike around a little, they all liked it. So far I have all my confidence in the bike. We need to start a Chumba crew... so we can target the Ironhorse riders
haha I'm probably going to get cut for that.

Gary, glad you were able to make the ride at O'Neill yesterday. I hope you had fun. Got some climbing in,but not too much and some downs. How did it handle on those tight turns through the jungle? As far as the mud and grime, get yourself a brush it and re-lube your chain before riding again. There's a good pic of you hucking. Like my pic, taken a little early, just as we took off.

I've read/heard that same comment several times, and my brief parking lot experience on 2 different XCLs confirms that. For my XC purposes, I could probably get away with some relatively light wheels, and maybe a TALAS/RP23 combo to shave a few ounces.

Nope, I missed the ride Saturday, and I'm kicking myself for it. Looks like a fun morning, but I was pretty tired from a Friday evening ride. Next time.

It was fun Gene, I had a little too much air pressure in my tires so it didnt tread well in the harder turns. But I can feels the tries trying to "hook" so I know I would have dont a lot better with less pressure. Yeah I'll be cleaning it after work today- My bike already looks like its been on 30+ rides haha, from all the crashes that no one saw. That picture was actually just me getting a feel for the ramp, but by the time I was ready to jump-everyone was already heading out
Thanks for putting together the great event.

Neil from Adrenaline bikes had his XCL built down to 27 punds for one of his races if i"m not mistaken. The overall bike feels very stiff with no flex. Different cranks, brakes, wheels, tires, handlbars, no lock on grips, carbon fiber stem spacers, egg beater pedals, RP23 and the Vanilla(lighter than the Talas) would be easily under 30ib.

Its a great bike to ride and a ride that influences me to go big. My only gripe is the saddle but like with just about any other seat I've tried- they are uncomfortable. Two people at the ride had this strange all leather seat that looked like it came off a chopper or something that felt like sitting on a tuff pillow. Its an ugly seat but SUPER comfortable- and I bet it weighs less too.

The difference between the Chumba and my Diamondback was like day and night- and then out of no where a solar eclipse . I never locked out or dropped down the fork or propedal the rear shock the whole climb and it still pedaled easier and better than my hardtail. Thats how awsome it is, although this was only the first ride. If there are any complaints when I do my review after 6 or so rides I will definantly mention it.

Gene worked hard to persuade me to go to the ride, I wish he would have worked on it earlier though. Because I only got 2 hours of sleep prior to the ride.. But I'm glad I went, got to meet some of the infamous people here and see some that I was too intimedated to aproach.

No sir I have never been to Whitting. I only have Fridays and Saturdays off, and since I've got such terrible stamina- I want to ride both Fridays and Saturdays now.

Would you be up for Whitting on up coming Friday? I'll be hitting Oaks Saturday. Or vise versa, doesnt matter. Just want to ride.

I can do Whiting on Friday, Saturday, I may do something epic if it's not too hot. Let me know. Whiting is not far from O'Neill Park so you would come from the same way you came. I'll give you directions when we set it up.

Neil's got a Talas 32 RLC on there, not a Vanilla. The Vanilla weighs more due to the steel coil spring. The Talas is all air.

The Pedals are Time Carbons, and he uses lock ons with the Cane Creek ergo lock on bar ends that work with the ODI type lock ons. (I know his bike pretty well, I've drooled over it at adrenaline )

It's the Selle Anatomica Titanico. They actually weigh more than most conventional bike seats. Very comfy though! Like a Brooks but better.

ahh IC looks can be very deceiving. Either way, I dont think my bike is any heavy although some people think its a little on the chubby side. If it were really weight I was concerned about, Id have the Yeti right now.

Thanks!, You know I feel bad because I usualy have to meet someone at least three times before I remember a name. Can you refresh my terrible memory please?
I will be more than happy to do some hucking/drops at oaks. I wanna catch some action shots me of in the air
36 may be a little bit heavy for me as I'm muscle mass challenged. But the 33.5 my bike is at right now I can pedal around all day. having a 2.35 rear doesnt help much with pedaling either though lol.

The first time I tried that jump I almost hit my face on the handle bar, because it was my first time on a full suspension in about 5 years. Didnt know what to expect, so the first time that jump the bike landed fine but my body launched forward even though I leaned back. I love the bike so far, lets just hope it doesnt break anytime soon!

It's not going to break ever . Even if you gain 150 lbs its still not going to break.
You can trim some fat easy. By changing your tires, post, stem ,bars later on when you want to ad some bling. Your wheel set is not the lightest but it is really strong.
You will have that wheel set for ever it is convertible so you can use it on any bike or fork you want. You said you wanted a mountain dirt jumper and you now have a mountain dirt jumper. I think you will be happy. The hard tail dirt jumper bikes are 34-35 lbs sometimes. They rarely have gears or rear suspension.

Your new bike kicks butt just the way it is although an STR sticker would finish it off if you can stand the weight gain

The only thing I'd worry about is riding it. A lot.

haha I'm working on an STR sticker right now. I only had one and that went on my Diamondback before I got the chumba. I'm not a weight weenie, but that STR sticker might add on another pound of Awsome to the swing arm though..

I'm hoping I get to take this on some serious riding soon, I think the bike may feel neglected because all I've done so far is pedal over big rocks.. Maybe I'll go do some more drops around urban areas today

sorry for the sketchy pix, these were taken in a rush.

You have way to many or big spacers on your bike. I find it funny that bike shops would build bikes like that. ALL bike shops know better.

They leave it long at first so you can try out different heights and see what works best for you.
