The mashers tend to utilize more of their fast-twitch muscle fibers. Much like a sprinter.

Spinners tend to utilize more of their slow-twitch fibers for sustained efforts. Much like long distance runners.

Fast-twitch fibers don't work very well for the long haul.

Usually -somehow- I end up in my easiest gear combo shortly after starting a climb. Then I close my eyes and try not to cry. Sometimes it works.

I spin most of the time. I save hammering for the steep stuff to get me over the top. Every once in a while I will hammer up a hill just to keep things interesting.

i hammer most of the time...but i've been riding SS lately so that could be why. i spun a lot while road riding though

I usually spin when I'm Wheelieing (sp?) uphills and hammer when I'm Wheelieing downhills!
