"Eccentric BBs suck asss IMHO.....i will never do it again (have had 3). I MUCH prefer sliders and MUCH prefer my ENO Eccentric rear hub....that thing is killer." Agree. When / if I get rid of my SIR it is sliders or me next time. The White Industries stuff is great (I have owned their stuff for years) "you don’t need a SS-specific frame as others have noted and in my opinion, the eccentric rear hub (especially if running v-brakes out back) is a better mechanism than an EBB anyway and while more expensive than a tensioner." Agree "Only downside is that if you don’t like White Industries, there are no other folks making this type of hub." Disagree. But there are other downsides. The price for the freewheels, chain line can be a challenge, engagement of the freewheel is not as good as let’s say a King, Hadley, DT, etc free hubs, weight and others. Again I like the WI stuff and may get one myself in the near future. However I do not think someone getting started with SS’ing should get the WI set. Why because when you start SS’ing you will start with a lower gear set-up (more teeth in the rear). As you get stronger or ride different trails you may want to change gearing. For example I am at the point now that I may want to drop a few teeth on my SS for most of the trails that I ride. However there are others that require lower gearing (for me).

no offense, but i dont buy the argument AT ALL as to their being an advantage to cassette hubs to change gearing. Whether freewheel or not, you need a different number of teeth either via different freewheel or different cog. So.......if you gotta change the gearing for whatever reason (really different terrain on a ride you are planning, preference, etc), you gotta change the gearing, period, cog or otherwise. And my point is that to have a debate about the "time" it takes to make a switch to a new sized cog versus a new sized freewheel is ridiculous since at least for me, with even limited brain cells, can make the switch in the same amount of time. And the chainline argument is theoretical in most cases....i have never had a problem across multiple single speeds. now stop with the hurtful words and dont disagree with me anymore! i am very sensitive. |
