Default Extreme Bike Makeover!

You know sometimes you get an urge to get a new bike, but can't justify the cost? Well, I just got a makeover instead. Ended up getting a new subframe (S/M AM) and a bearing/hardware rebuild kit from Chumba, and a new fork while I was at it.

My "old" M/L FR EVO - circa June 2006

My EVO going under the knife

Home made bearing press kit!

And here she is!
  • Replaced the 2006 Marzocchi All Mountain 1 with a 2008 Fox Talas 36 RC2
  • Changed out all bearings and hardware
  • Replaced Chris King headset (creak, creak) with a Sunline V1 All Mountain
  • Rebuilt both wheels with DT Swiss 5.1 hoops

You did an excellent job on reworking that bike! You musta had Chris King Hubs, to be able to rebuild the wheels, just using new rims (that's what I recently did)>

The new color, just whips on the old 'military' green! BTW, the number plates on the wall are from racing XC, right ?

Finally, I see you added a 'seat-droppin' mechanism too! Very cool, as that says, "I pedal up the hills too!"

Thanks! The hubs are actually Hadleys, but yes, I can totally see quality hubs outlasting many sets of rims.

Those numbers on the wall are just from the LA Marathon and LB Marathon bike rides. I wish I could say they're from racing or actually running the marathons, but unfortunately, I can not.

It's the remote cable for the Maverick Speedball. More info here: http://www.maverickbike.com/main/do/...s/productID/44

makes sense for an all mountain bike
have the seat high for climbs then before you hit some jump flick that joystick and drop the seat

How, where did you have the paint job done? I just painted an old road bike frame so I'm curious about paint job. Your's looks like a pro job -- especially with the new Chumba logo.

Like tkblazer mentioned, I just got a new front triangle from Chumba. The Candy Red Metallic is actually one of their production colors. It's the same color as the one featured on their EVO page (http://www.chumbaracing.com/evo.shtml).

As for where the powder coating was done, I'm assuming somewhere local? My money would be on Olympic, but it could be elsewhere as well.

Nice make over on the bike!

That seat post is pretty cool. How do you like the joystick control?

I had the non-remote version previously, so I basically had to reach between my legs every time I wanted to adjust the saddle.

With the joystick, I find that I actually change seat positions more often since it's so much easier. I have the trigger situated right next to my front shifter, so I can just yank on it with my index finger.

If you do get one of these seats, definitely get the remote. It makes it so much more worth it.
