Default 46 Pound Gorilla

Some of you folks might have seen this already but, I saw one for the first time yesterday. I was riding the XC course at Southridge and was completing the last downhill section before hitting the staging area and a DH'er came rolling up on another GT. Being a GT ethusiast, or apologist depending who you talk to, I noticed the drivetrain was missing and the chain was on the wrong side. I remember thinking that DH bikes are a bit different and I wasn't versed on all the particulars of the DH scene but, it seemed odd that there was a second chain leading to this center section in the frame.

I was surprised to learn the GT had produced the first production bike with an internal transmission. 8 speeds with a gear ratio that rivals a standard 24. The added bonus that he pointed out was that he can change gears at any time - under load or even standing still! It's a bit on the heavy side (46 pounds) so it won't make a good XC but, I was still impressed none the less.

Just thought I'd share the GT love.....

That's pretty cool. Got any more pics, especially of the crank area?

I'm no DH'er so I don't follow the scene or the bikes much but I feel like Honda (of all companies) designed the first internal transmission DH bike a few years ago. Yeah, being able to shift w/out peddling was the big plus, I guess.

i'm not that big of a fan of the GT internal tranny bikes, i like the Nicolai bikes for that... but the DHi is a sweet bike and light at 38 lb.

BCD was the first one to make and race a internal transmission DH bike. GT also had a DH bike with an internal transmission the same year in 1997. Being able to shift without pedaling is not the selling point on the transmission, not breaking rear derailluers in the middle of a race is.

I had some guy cracking on my Brookie saying it was a GT knock off due to the jack shaft design. lol Sorry GT was many years late. But the intrenal trans is pretty cool. Jackshaft bikes have ZERO bob in the rear no matter what.
