Default Bike Camping

Has anyone ever done a weekend long ride involving camping but carrying your camping gear with you? I was thinking about building up a steel mountain bike and putting a rear rack and some panniers on it and making it into a trekking bike.

The B.O.B. Ibex trailer would be great for bike camping too.

I rode the Jeep Trail Dusy Ershim for a few days with Ted and our friends. All we had was our bikes and 30lb. gear bags. We pumped water out of the streams, and carried sleeping bags and enough dry food to last for a few days. We started fires to keep us warm at night. Be careful on the descents, because it is really easy to endo. At least half the group endo'ed. Also, make sure you are in good shape, riding with an extra 30lbs. is not easy.

All that being said, it is a lot of fun, and I would highly recommend it.

I just check out that route. Looks pretty fun. Was there any singletrack that runs alongside of it???

I wonder if it would be possible to link together a route from Big Bear to Crestline, all singletrack, that would be awesome.

I have access to a cabin in Crestline and Neil's got one in Big bear... camp in between the two points somewhere, then finish off the weekend with some chairlift assisted riding on Sunday afternoon

Hi Rob,

Yes, there is some singletrack but not a lot. Dusy is an extreme jeep trail, so even though the trail is wider, it is really rocky and the terrain can get pretty gnarly.

Rob, I've done some in years past including some "really" local stuff.

Check "the corridor" ride up by Santa Barbara. The guy (Chase I think... it has been years since I've talked to him) from Old Man Mountain racks has a cool write up about it.

Singletrack from Crestline to Big Bear is no go. Lots of fire road, but no continuous single from there. Hold on, I also have another idea that might work. Back channel for details.

I once rode the back side of Big Bear to Pioneer Town and camped remotely along the way fully loaded. That was cool.

I've even used my Old Man Mountain racks on my full suspension bike for camping. That was fun.

Hit me up back channel if you want more info on some of the more qt stuff.

Think this way, basically anything you can hike or jeep you can ride. Opens up tons of possibilities. I don't know that I bike Dusy. I jeeped it this past year and it was pretty rough in spots and not bike rough. Jeep rough.

I used to ride from SF to Point Reyes and back with a nice pack of gear. It was mostly trail riding (nasty Mt Tam first) with some fire roads and paved links. I had a one man tent, some tools, knives, lighter, money and water.

Maybe not so rural but, not too bad if you keep it simple.

Stinson Beach and Point Reyes rocks. Must have been a great ride.

I know of some guys that do this on a regular basis. I was going to join them next year after I do my 21 day tour. They typically ride for 1 to 2 weeks at a time, but they also ride thru towns to pick up supplies and repair bikes and stuff.

The B.O.B. Ibex trailer would be great for bike camping too.
This was my setup for the Great Divide Race this past June/July:

In that rear gear bag: Tarptent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, spare clothing, odds and ends.

Large frame bag: food, multi-tool, water tablets, energy drinks

Small frame bag: a few bars and a snack or two

Handlebar Bag: food. I could usually fit a few chef boyardees, a few bars and some other small snacks.
