Default what pedals you?

whats up guys,

I was wondering what pedals everyone uses? I'v been on a search for a pedal thats both a platform and clipless. Because it wouldnt be everyday that I chose to ride clipless or platform so I was looking for an in between kinda thing.

Or is this simply impossible?

I go between the Crank Brothers Eggbeaters and the Candy. I mostly ride with the Candy.

To tell you the truth...I don't feel comfortable riding my bikes without being clipped in. That's just me...

i recently purchased the Atomlab QuickStep Pedals, nice big platform, relatively easy to step into (pretty new to them) but really easy to get out of. They are on sale at bluesky for 70 clams:

hmm, all these pedals look to be for clipless only. I would imagine trying to ride with these pedals would seem like pedling with a rock under your shoes.

Shall I just go clipless and call it a day? I actually havent seen anyone here using platforms from the ride photos and what not.

How easy is it to bail on clipless before a crash?

I just put SPD clipless pedals on today for the first time after riding platforms for a while. I was afraid of not being able to bail with the clipless pedals. That fear was put to rest quickly.

Wow, what a difference. I love riding clipless pedals.

You can set the tension very low on the pedals so that it is easy to get your feet out. Also, there are multi-release cleats that allow you to release your feet by going in several directions, not just twisting. This makes it more forgiving when you have to bail quickly.

I felt like I had so much more power on the climbs and when accelerating in the flats. It made it easier to land small jumps without losing the pedals. And it made it easier to cheat and lift the bike while trying to bunny hop.

I will never go back to platforms for the riding I do. Clipless pedals are fantastic!

I say forget about platforms and find yourself a good set of SPD clipless pedals that you can enjoy.

No problem. Any pedals you get can go on your Yeti, so consider it an investment in the future!

If you don't have SPD shoes, I recommend the Answer Impacts. They are inexpensive ($60), comfortable and fit nicely.

I actually intended to just practice my clipping and unclipping today in the cul-de-sac. I thought it would take forever to get used to the SPD system. I ended up riding 14 miles of singletrack and fireroad just 10 minutes after first using the SPD pedals.

Can you tell I'm a fan?!

I had no success with the 50/50's--major slippage issues.

I use Azonic A-Frames. Those coupled with 510's and your foot is not moving one bit. You may as well be clipped in. They aren't clipless, but you did ask what we all used.

Eggs on the MTB and Eggs on the Roadie.
I'm still riding the same original Eggs I got in 2003 on the MTB.
I'm a clyde and not had a single issue with them. Love them!

As for platforms, the Wellgo Mags have been great (until I went clipless). They have great grip and are light weight, but they will leave pits in your skin if you slip off the pedals. The pins stick great to any shoes but also rake your shins!

I like Crankbro's Candy's also. I run them on my AM and XC bikes. Just recently took regular eggbeater's off my road bike for some Speedplay Zero roadie pedals.

Flats are really good for DH riding cause you do bail off more and for racing (put your foot down easily around turns), but otherwise clipless is the way to go.

Eggbeater's/Candy's don't have a tensioner, but they do have two cleat settings. One is normal, the other is easy/beginner (which is what I *still* use).

You may fall over a few times at first, but no biggie, everyone does it. Besides, hubby is a PRO at falling over in parking lots

On my trail bike I use the Shimano PD-M647. You can ride clipped in or out.

On my DH bike I ride flats. Crank Brothers 5050x with the cone shaped pegs and FiveTen shoes are the best combination. Your foot never moves (unless you want it to).

Thumbs up

Brewmaster: Excellent recommendation on the Answer shoes, they indeed are very good. My girlfriend is running them as well (I raced with a pair of them for years!). Good price, good quality and good value!

Glad to hear you're going clipless, but here's a thought for the future; if you ever get tired of trying to find the little point on the front with the SPD's and then doing the ankle wiggle and trying to get them to rear clip (while you're climbing a tough hill), consider the Speedplay Frog pedals.

The Speedplay's are super easy to get in and very, very easy to get out of. You can dab in a 1/4 second flat! No unclicking out. Just move your ankle and it's like coming off a platform pedal. Though, some folks like the 'retained' feeling the other brands offer and this is a consideration too. Time ATAC's and Egg Beaters come to mind and I endorse these as well, tho' I'll always give an extra to the Speedplays!
