The "cleat" comes with the pedals. They are different for each pedal company, but the attachment to the shoes is standardized.

Regular shoes on "clipless w/ platform" pedals is only good for tooling around the block.

Das, as Winston said... the shoes are all "SPD compatible" which means that you can pick any mountain shoe and it'll work with Shimano, Crankbros, etc. pedals.

The cleats come with the pedal when you buy, then you just install on the shoe.

Just make a note that most *road* pedals and shoes aren't compatible. I got roadie shoes for my road bike and had to buy a new set of pedals since they're not at all set up the same way.

Speaking of which... for those of you with like Speedplay mtn pedals, are they SPD?

If you get a platform pedal with clipless system it shouldn't interfere with your shoe, but the platform itself isn't as good for DH riding as regular platforms will be.

Default Shimano SPD

The pedals listed below are excellent. They are a nice blend of flat/platform and clipless. The tension is very easy to adjust. They both have plastic cages which are both light and forgiving should your pedal hit ground or rock. I use them for dh and mountainX and find them very easy to get in and out of should I need to dab in a corner. I have gone through about 8 sets of these pedals over the last 3 seasons (on 4 different bikes).

Shimano PD-M424 - $60
Shimano PD-M647 - $130

The shoes also have an influence on the effectiveness of the pedals (not just Shimano in this case). I gone through many high end shoes including Carnac, Adidas, Shimano, Oakley, and Specialized. If found the Shimano dh shoes to be superior in fit, finish, and overall performance. I am very hard on my shoes and I also want them to look good and perform even better. I am always pleased with any of the higher end models from Shimano or the ones listed below.

NOTE: The shoes I have are SPD not just the normal gum sole - those are NOT that good.

Shimano SH-MP66 MTB Shoes '06

Enjoy.

Hubby got those shoes at Off the Top in Vancouver and doesn't really like 'em for DH. Weird! I guess it's all preference

They're still sweet looking shoes. I think he should just put cleats in and ride 'em with his mallets on his Socom.

Yeah I hear ya' I can't comment on how those Shimano MP-66's would work with flats but I got em' over 3 months ago to use specifically as clipless shoes with the Time Z pedals.

What really drew me to the MP-66's was the the hard rubber sole which is wearing really well compared to my old Oakleys soles which I put into an early grave. I found the Oakleys sole not durable enough and too soft for a lot of hike-a-bike type rides. They were really comfy though and the uppers held up well.

Now the 5.10's and 50/50's that I picked up last week from Francesca at Beyond to use with my P1 are sick. I love the ability and the freedom to readjust my foot position and the ability to really get ballsy going into a corner and have that inner foot ready to stick into the dirt to offer some support if necessary.

Hey dude, Partially because of this thread, i went out friday and got some cb Mallets, and some Adidas shoes from the path. I am now clipped in. It is a world of difference. i don't know why it took me so long.
i rode them for about 30 min to get used to it. just some small jumps and climbs. Than we were off. the mallets are real nice pedal. once the break in (1 hour tops) it becomes second nature. and if not the platforms are big enough to ride clipped out! ya, you will fall a few times, but on a rough climb, if you trust your balance, they will give you so much more power. and since you are now the bike, you have a lot more control over the back end! a good thing on a hardtail on a sketchy downhill!

oh btw 79 for the mallet c at the path

awsome, I will be getting mines at Adrenaline. Price wise I'm sure Adrenaline will match, I've been giving them endless calls about price matching on the Yeti to egt the best possible price. I actually reached a price I am happy enough to where if I ever found a cheaper price, I wouldnt care anymore.
