Shimano 647's on my trail bike and Frog Speedplays on my XC bike.
Personally, if the Speedplays were more durable (especially the cleats), I would ride them more often. Love the feel and the ease of getting in and out of them.

I could be wrong I do believe with the Crank Bros Mallet you can take out the platforms and run them as eggbeaters. I have the Mallets on my GT and now run with the Shimano SPD. The Shimanos are so much easier to get in and out of. The mallets were to me just OK.

CrankBros pedals. Eggs, Candys, Mallets for mtn. and road.
I found them easier to disengage then Shimano's because they seem to spit you out when you turn to release. I don't even do the "Out and Down" motion they always say for SPDs. I just turn my leg out and they release. Likes: Never get fouled by dirt or mud. Pretty maintenance free. They have lots of float so my knees are happy. Customer service from CB is freaking fantastic. I've had a LBS sell me the wrong rebuild kit and I called just asking what kit to buy and they sent it to me for free. Easy to rebuild. CB is local to OC. Dislikes: The cleats are brass and can wear pretty quick for some folks. I run mine a very long time till I manage to pull out of them under hard pedaling than I trash them. I think someone out there sells a steel cleat out there but never tried them. The pedals can leave dents or impressions from the springs on the bottom of your shoes. So if you have some high zoot carbon soles, be warned it'll happen. I don't care personally, and I don't get hot spots at all since I've switched to orthotic insoles (a different problem not CB pedal related). The spring design is such that if you slam the bottom of the pedal on a rock it can release you from the pedal. It can happen, but now I just time my pedal stroke better through rock gardens. Anyhow, overall I'm very happy with CBs pedals. I thought about Speedplays too but right now I'm sticking with the CB pedals. Also, there is a break in period like the first week or so for the cleats. They'll feel harder to release at first but that'll pass. Carl |

I use the shimanos m324s with the multi-release cleats (they dis-engage by twisting your foot left, right or by pulling straight back)
These pedals have the shimano SPD on one side, and they have a regular platform on the flip side. I use these because I set my SPDs so loose that every once in a while they detach when I'm on the trail so the platform allows me to still keep my foot on the pedal until i can clip back in. Second reason is there is one particular trail I ride that is so rocky and technical and all downhill so I like to ride it unclipped (I endoed there twice and both times I have landed on my feet since I was un-clipped) Third reason Is i only have one bike.....so when I go riding with my kids at the park I don't have to wear biking shoes.... http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/sto...p&feat=8258-tn These |

Steel cleats would cause your pedals to wear out quicker. That is a more expensive problem than changing cleats. Just my $0.02.

they make me cringe a little bit. Meat tenderizer is no joke! haha BMX tore up my shins, I remember a few time bashing my shins on the meat grinding pedals an went to the bone. Painful....
![]() I appreciate everyones comments. So far Crank Bros seems to be the company of choice. mallets or candy. I guess I'll pick up those answer shoes as well. what am I to do with my favorite riding shoes now? LOL the shoes with no tread and attract dirt like a magnet.
