Talking Has anyone been to Whistler? I am going!

I am going to Canada to visit Whistler this coming Labor Day Weekend! I am going to meet up with a friend of mine who moved to Washington last year. He lives in Bellingham (SP) and I guess there is tons of riding there as well.

So my question is this: What should a Whistler virgin bring or prepare for this trip? I know that I am going to bring all of my armor and such. I am going to check my bike with the airline. Any tips for me?

I am SO stoked about this trip! Props to my wife because SHE suggested that I go.... Hmmm wonder if "Sancho" will be with her when I am riding? LOL Actually, I have watched our kids for her twice while she went and had "girls weekend." So now it is my turn.

I was going to go to Northstar again but she said that I should fly up to Washington and visit my friend and go to Canada to ride. I didn't hesitate one bit on booking the trip.

I am just so stoked for this... to me, Northstar is like Disneyland for DH riding. Whistler is like Las Vegas.

So, if you have been, anything for me to try or do or be prepared for? For instance, do I need to exchange money? Can I pay with US Funds?

Make sure you have a valid passport or paperwork saying your in the process of renewing it... also NO you cannot pay with US funds.... when I was in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island a couple years ago, I just charged everything on my credit card and dealt with it when I got home....

Ditto what Neccros said. Have a valid passport or paperwork saying you're in the process of renewing it. We didn't use much cash up there, just charged everything to our Credit cards. As of this year, you cannot get your tax refunded so things are pretty expensive up there. If I think of anything else, I'll repost.

If you're paying with cash, stop at a bank and exchange, they give you a better rate than the currency exchange places in Whistler.

If you use a credit card, you get the best exchange rate. If you need to use Canadian cash for small stuff, you can get it from the various ATM machines. Oh, and if you have a Debit card (with a Credit card logo) do not use the Debit card option. Someone in Whistler stole my pin number and made 2 charges on my card before I noticed and had to cancel the card (which happened after we got home). My Credit Union told me that the only time you should use the "Debit card" option is at a gas station. They told me never to enter my pin number in front of anyone as they are getting good at stealing them!!!

And most of all, have fun!!!! After the 1st trip you will want to go every year!!!

I have only applied for one job in Vancouver, so far...
Truer words were never spoken (written?)

There's some good info on Lee Likes Bikes.

We're heading up there this weekend for 6 days of riding. I can't wait!

I posted some pics in another thread a while ago. LINK. Here are some other photos from previous trips:

Thumbs up Oh YEAH!!

I did the same thing last September!

My friend lives in Woodinville. We rode a few days in Washington, drove up to Whistler and the North Shore, in his motorhome for a couple of days, then did more riding in Washington.

I shipped my bike up to his place via DHL. I wound NOT take it on the airlines. The cost to ship via DHL and UPS are a little less than the airlines charge, but the biggest reason for me was my bike being covered for loss by the shippers, and NOT by the airlines. Basicly, it's like luggage to them, if it get's lost, it's not covered by any insurance.

The riding in Washington State is amazing!
And Whistler is, well Whistler!

Here's some random shots.

Have a GREAT time!

Washington

Washington

Whistler

North Shore

And yes, I did "Crash", quite often!

We didn't hit the island, we road up around on Mt. Frome. No lift access on Frome, so be ready to pedal up the fireroad to the FUN. We did Oil Can, and hooked in a couple of other trails along with it.

I really want to hit that container. That is at Whister, right? It's the truck box that you ride up on to and jump off of. Thanks for all the tips and such, I am so excited, I can't stand it!

Bring money. Lot's of money. Don't stress about spending it. The rest is easy.

Nightlife in the Village is almost as good as the riding.

Have fun. I'm jealous.

That container drop is huge! Make sure you have medical insurance and have fun up there.

what would happen to the hydraulics on a bike like the brakes and stuff if they were that high in the air???
hopefully it would put air in them or anything
