Reading the Fully Loop recommendations got me to thinking about lights. I bought the Nite Riders MiNewt and have been real happy with it's performance and I only paid 100 bucks for it. I don't know if you can get that kind of deal, but I see them retail for 150 and that's a pretty inexpensive night light. I think it's about the best deal going for a low cost light that works pretty good.
Any other low cost alternatives someone would like to recommend?

Light & Motion turns heads with Stella Light & Motion, a recognized leader in bicycle lighting solutions, announced the addition of its newest high-output LED system, Stella. Using the latest LED technology, Light & Motion has been able to achieve twice the light output of comparable single-LED light systems currently on the market (180 lumens). Slotting in above its highly regarded Vega model, Stella adds a super-compact, ultra-lightweight, bar, helmet or strap mountable LED offering to the Light & Motion product lineup. With an anticipated release date of August 15th, 2007, Stella will arrive just in time for the fall night-riding season. “Obviously we’re quite excited about Stella,” says Light & Motion Bicycle Light Sales Manager, Eric Squires. “There’s a lot of demand in the marketplace for a race-ready, lightweight LED system and we feel that Stella is the perfect fit.” Squires added, “In addition to the seriously bright light output, we’ve seen burn times of over 3.5 hours with the Stella on the highest setting, and burn times of over 30 hours on the lowest setting. We are confident that Stella will be ideal for a broad spectrum of customers including; recreational night-riders, 24-hour racers, adventure racers, and bicycle commuters.” Stella will be offered with two battery configurations at two different price points. The Stella 180-L will include Light & Motion’s flyweight 3-cell Lithium Ion battery and Multi-Chem 2-hour “fast” charger at an MSRP of $299. The Stella 180-N buys you the same lightweight LED head, but pairs it with an economical NiMH (nickel metal hydride) battery and a standard trickle charger for an MSRP of $199. In 1989, Light & Motion founders Barrett Heywood and Michael Topolovac started experimenting with underwater lighting systems in Monterey, California. These dive enthusiasts were driven to build a vertically integrated manufacturing company where designers would create innovative world-class products for a variety of sport-specific applications. In 1999, they brought their proven experience and pioneering spirit to the world of cycling. As their product line continues to expand, their mission remains the same: To enhance the lives of our customers through our products and personal interactions. Light & Motion supports its customers and products by creating an organization that exemplifies and embraces the ideals of quality and trust. The company supports measures to reduce waste and emissions by recycling and utilizing alternative transportation. They also encourage consumers to return spent batteries for safe recycling. Over 65 percent of the Light & Motion staff commutes via alternative transportation and 25 percent bike to work. The company is recognized by the US Congress, California State Assembly, and AMBAG (Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments) for outstanding and invaluable service to the community. Yeah, I have a lights & Motion light, but some how I lost the charger. Good light. I might buy this one too though for a contrast light, plus my MinNewt is only for the bars.

Holy crap, the Alias HID is unf******real!! I have the NiteRider Evolution (6 volt halogen) that I got from the LBS for ~$150, and it's good, but I wish I had like three or four of them on me. Then maybe it would be as good as the Alias (but it is 400 buckaroos...). Man...

I have a NiteRider Evolution Smart that I like just fine, and works great on The Loop. It's halogen, though, so be prepared to suffer the condemnation of the holier-than-thou HID crowd. You'll acclimate to the ridicule, but it still stings at times...

Yes, HID lights are bright but replacement bulbs are $90...$15 for a Halogen replacement. I have also seen HID be problems out on the trail not waiting to relight after being turned off. But when they work right the are the best.
I also have a older Nite Rider evolution, 4 years later the run time is down to 1hr 20 minutes. I could replace the battery but the newer LEDs look like the better deal. Dean

This company seems to be pushing the envelope with LED's... the Wilma (830 lumens) is brighter than some HID's... but the Betty, oh the Betty.... 1500 lumens! but it's serious $$$. I've been waiting for LED tech to catch up... some of my pro's: lower power consumption more settings, programmable, etc. more durable cheaper bulb replacement and in some cases upgradeable as LED technology improves. ![]()

The output of the Lupine stuff is nice, but did you catch the pricelist? And I'm guessing that's in pounds, so we're going to be paying considerably more in the states.
Hopefully they'll make back their ROI and can drop prices to garner market share. Chris |

Admittedly, it's a bit pricey, but I recently bought the Light & Motion HID Li-Ion. I'm a girl at the end of the line sometimes and I'm afraid of the boogeyman and the huge ruts so this helps me see a ways ahead better than the LED I used previously and with the 3 1/2 -4 hours burn time I don't have to worry about it. Also, cars can't say they didn't see me. It came highly recommended and so far it's definitely been worth the cost but I can honestly say it was tough to choose it because of that.

They are in Germany, so I am thinking they are in Euros. Still, that's about 37% more in dollars. Hell, even if their prices were in Canadian dollars they would be expensive. Nice lights, but I would have to stop eating if I bought a $1000 light.

I think the best deal going is the NiteRider Enduro HID, which can be had for $250 in various places -- if it's still being sold. Mine's been great. Actually, I have two.
Here's more description from someone at Niterider (because it's not listed on their web site since it's a special deal light). The Enduro is actually a special light system deal set up a few months ago between NiteRider and its dealers. The idea behind the Enduro is to get people on HID lights at a more affordable price. Among our standard 2006 lineup, the Enduro is closest to the FireStorm system, less the extra hardware for handlebar mounting and a differently shaped battery. In relation to our older-model light systms, the Enduro is most similar to the Storm (same shape battery). The Enduro battery is not of lesser quality than other systems. Actually, it's the same battery as the one used on the FireStorm and Rage--only the cells are arranged differently so it can be more easily stashed in a jersey pocket or hydration pack. Moreover, it's the same battery that powered our top-level lights up to 2006. |
