    Lightbulb Who logs their rides?

    Okay...I'm an information junkie.

I know there's folks out there that just ride their bikes, but I'm the type that wants to know:
    1. Where I've ridden
    2. How far I've traveled
    3. What was my max heart rate
    4. What was my average heart rate
    5. How much did I climb
    6. What was my average speed
    7. What was my max speed
    8. How many calories did I burn
    9. How many miles did I ride this week/month/year
    10. etc.
I guess you all get the picture...

I was inspired by Pain Freak's post, Going Good. It made me realize how horrible my training was this year and that I really had no excuse to not ride. I don't roll into the office until about 11am. Well I'm pleased to say that I logged 215 miles last week and I'm recommitted to my goal of riding 5000 miles for 2007.

Anyway...back to my point of this post.

If you do log your rides, how do you log 'em?

There's a bunch of sites/programs out there, but I log them using 4:
    1. MotionBased
    2. GeoLadders
    3. Garmin Training Center
    4. BikeJournal
Each one has their good points:
    1. MotionBased and the Garmin Edge go hand in hand and you get to see every bit of your data and has great report features
    2. GeoLadders has an addictive point/ladder system and I'm pretty stoked that I got my first Weekly Top 5 icon. It's also a great resource for finding new routes for both the mountain and the road.
    3. Garmin Training Center is great for keeping your ride data offline.
    4. BikeJournal is a great log. Especially if you're not using a GPS and you're just using a regular speedometer. It also has an addictive ranking feature that makes you want to keep riding to move up the ranks.
I'm kind of interested to know if anyone uses BikeJournal. I created an STR "club" on there and set a goal for the club to log 25,000 miles for 2007. I'm sure with all the riders on here, we can shatter that goal and it would be interesting to see how we all compare to each other. (The roadies will no doubt have the mileage advantage and I think Pain Freak has already logged about 73,467 miles for the year).

I see the majority of people out there have some type of speedometer on their handlebars, so I can only assume that you have some level of interest on your ride stats.

Please chime in. I'm very interested in hearing your input.

Used to keep a log of all my stats, but never really did anything with it, I wasn't a pro xc racer, so it really didn't matter to me in the long run. For me personally, I do a lot of the same rides over and over, so I pretty much know what I should be doing, I can tell when I'm having an off day. But I do understand keeping a log, I just lost interest/need for it myself.

I use Sport Tracks from Zonefivesoftware.com. It is a free download and is loaded with cool features and is very user friendly. Here's a screenshot for an idea of what it looks like.

I do bikejournal, my Garmin software, and also in an Excel spreadsheet. I am an analytical chemist, so keeping data (especially on myself) is always fun for me! Where I work, you can't have too much data.

Very sweet. I'm assuming that all your data is stored offline on your PC? Looks like I'll be playing with that tomorrow!!

    Awww...I forgot about Excel.

I made a spreadsheet that tells me how many miles I have to ride per day and per week to reach my yearly goal.

I would definitley check out Sport Tracks and play around with all the features--way too much for me to get into here. I tried all the others and Sport Tracks was my favorite.

Sweet!! Glad I could help. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I've been using it for almost 2 years now and have found a few hidden features.

Hidden? Like is there a simple way to just import my Garmin Training Center stuff? Looks like I have to use MotionBased to export stuff one ride at a time.

The Equipment, Athlete History, and Reports are awesome.

    Please divulge your knowledge!!

At first I made my own program through VB.Net and It was very basic. I then bought a Garmin 205 through Craigs List and I love it but I wish I could buy the Heart rate monitor but that only will work with the Garmin 305. Use the default training software.

In my quest for new trails and many of those trails being a major bushwacks, I got tried of loosing wireless bike computers and have not had one for a couple of years. The computers I bought were expensive because they keep track of altitude gains. Now I sometimes take GPS when I am plotting new rides.

When I first started riding I was getting a idea how much climbing and how far I could ride without bonking. Now my rides are limited by how much water I can carry.

Wink Gee... I feel so inadequate.

I use old napkins, odd bits of paper, back of postal reciepts.. then throw everything away once a week. I use to be very religous about keeping training records, especially when I was a sponsored racer. We didn't have GPS technology available, just used a heart monitor and recorded everything... even did the blood lactose testing every week as part of the training schedule... But I grew weary of all that & now just ride... if I feel slow and tired, I rest... if I feel frisky, I go ride with younger grasshoppers on my SS!

Allison keeps track of all our rides on EgoLadders and Bike Journal.
I'm shooting for 2500mi this year. Wish it would be more, but we'll see. I guess not too bad for our second full year of riding. With commuting to work, and probably ramping up VQ training this fall/winter we may be on track for a lot more mileage. Just crossed over 1700mi.

I use geoladders, and really like using BikeJournal. Also have my ride info in Training Center.

I dig the information also. I like being able to go back and see everything.

Oh, btw... I signed up on BikeJournal for STR

I'll log mine most of the time on geoladders, really just for fun to see my miles over the year and that sort of thing. I've used them more as a resource for finding new rides than anything else!
It is kinda fun to see how much I'm riding compared to other people though, keeps the competitive juices flowing...but I don't have a 305 so I cant post new routes over there, which limits me to a point, though it also keeps me from taking it too seriously!

Geoladders. Good to see how far I've gone as well as comparing times on same trail during different times of year. I also use it for finding new trails when traveling Points can be cool, but when they got rid of prizes...not as important
