Default I remember in the good old day... (tire related)

When you had a flat and you pulled out an actuall RUBBER patch, some rubber glue, a match and a small piece of sand paper and patched a tire up properly...

These days all I see is some plastic clear patches with a tiny bit of adhesive on them..

Do they make a REAL tire patch kit these days?

the glues are MUCH easier to work with on a trail or at home. Just patched a tube with one yesterday. AND....less waste! Not sure if they still have the old skul patches...have not looked. Give the new ones a try...when done right, they work quite well.

I stopped buying the rubber patches with vulcan glue years ago. I got tired of pulling out the glue then finding out it's evaporated and now I'm SOL on the trail. The glueless patches are much better. It's easy to use and it'll get you back to your car. You can glue patch it later if you want. I once had a glueless patch last 2 years! I forgot what brand it was but I haven't had the same luck since. Currently, I'm using some Performance Bike brand and they don't last very long. I've got to pump up the tires every 3 wks.

thats exactly what i'm going to do.

I tried a new patch a couple years ago and it didn't do so well.. but I still bought a small pack of them in case. I am going to carry a real tire patch kit via your suggestion. I have more faith in rubber than a piece of clear plastic with glue on it.

Make sure you cut and carry a small section of that old tube as a tire boot...

Those small clear patches are temporary fixes. They're not so great for a long term patch job.

excuse my lack of knowledge but waht exactly is a tire-boot?

cut a tire in half and fold it around the tire you patched?

thats my guess...

If you get a hole or rip in the tire, it basically covers the hole from the inside and keeps the tube from popping through...

Also if you lack a patch kit or spare tube, it can be used to cover the hole temporary and get you home....

Sure, it's called "Stan's"

Seriously though, they still sell them. Just about every bike shop I've ever been in has the little pre-packed kits by the register for a couple bucks.

I'll bite...

I'll try Stan's along side my idea of a real patch kit, just in case.

Besides with Rubber Cement you never know when a little huffing and hucking may be in order.
