Unhappy MTB parts Failures

We all have our parts failure horror stories. I found a cool web site that features mtb parts failures:

http://pardo.net/bike/pic/fail-001/

Check out the fork failure picture and text (och!)

Check out the Steer Tube failure near the bottom of the page, looks like that one is going to hurt!

Yep did the same thing to my 2004 Fox Vanilia 125. Went into a rut on San Juan sheared half the axle mounts off...the crazy thing was that my Mavic 521 did not even go out of true. Those first run Fox Forks were weak sauce.

Have been a threw axle guy ever since.

so, this brings up another point/topic that's kinda related: what have you broken? the hard part: do we limit to things broken "JRA" or also include stuff broken whilst wrenching?

broken JRA:
countless chains- because of this i wont put a KMC chain on any of my bikes now.
taco'd a chainring pre-riding the sea otter course. i felt manly
seatpost bolt- got to ride down zips and back to t-brew w/o a seat. that was fun.

seen broken JRA: magnesium brake arch on a manitou 5. a buddy was chasing me down mach 1. he didnt remember to turn at the bottom. oops.

whilst wrenching: nada (knocking on wood now) but i did learn that you can make a brake-end on a cable fit into a shifter- i cut off the wrong end- so, file away, and it's still working to this day!

not me, but whilst wrenching by another: kestrel roadie frame- the guy didnt know you couldnt clamp the top tube. jeez i hope he's moved onto another industry (he did have a brief stint at Jax) there's an expensive "oops"

Thumbs up Just Riding Along and........

Frames;

Jamis Dakar Expert....dented the downtube crashing on Holy Jim 3 weeks after I bought it, road it hard for eight more months, then killed it on Bell Ridge.

Kona Bear.....road it hard for two years, and broke it in Moab, on Porcipine Rimm on the "diving board".

Wheels killed...two folded Rhino Lites, on the front! I haven't killed any Path built wheels yet.

Bent pedal spindles.....too many to list.

Twisted two Race Face Turbine crank arms.

Shock mount bolts....three. I use the grade 8(?) hardened steel bolts now.

Oh, and there's the seatpost that "just came appart"......

I think about the best i have ever done was coming down Skyline in Corona many years ago, hitting the little singletracs that crossed the road and came flying around a corner way out of shape to wheelie through a gulley next to the road and stuffed my ft wheel directly into the side of said Gulley resulting in an imediate stopping of the bike and instantaneous ejection of the rider. Final talley : tacoed ft wheel, bent Rock Shox and down tube stuffed into head tube of one old skool GT Tequesta... had to carry it out... to give you an idea of when this happened I was able to build the new bike based on the just released GT RTS-1 full suspension frame... Yes I am talking about the first generation...

Damn I am old. But it has been one hell of a ride...

Default On my XT's

Ripped the granny out. The bolts were cut in half and bent at an angle. When I pulled the other two bolts out (that did not break) they were also tweaked. Hammering out of the saddle up a hill and I do not think the alum spider on the XT’s could take it.

broke my subframe piece on my old AMP B4. Took it off completely mid ride. Balance was way off and went OTB within a couple minutes. Finished rest of the ride (down and up) with no further issues. Will find part and put it in photo. My replacement part failed due to it not being heat treated, 3rd part worked, but retired the bike ......now I'm a Homer!
