Default Dino Brown's 7/19 Fully Loop/Hospital BLOG

Dear Diary,
Thursday the 19th of July, a day I will surely remember. Ricky showing up on his girlfriends "Mary Poppins" bicycle.....Rob's (i.e Woobie's) birthday celebration.... the Huge rider turnout.... Andy Rut with his BOB and sweet 80's jukebox..... 1X1 Clyde with his rolling refreshments wagon... Diamond Dave on his new cyclocross..... Woobie's bike "riding" off into the sunset without him....etc. etc. etc.

While memorable indeed, the evening will be remembered for one thing--- CARNAGE!!!

The carnage began when Pakiha (the King of All Bad Crashes) decided to pad his points lead. Not one of his better landings-that's for sure! I WAS impressed with the calmness he showed while waiting for Schecky to show up with an STR ambulance (i.e. his truck).

It was getting dark- the 5 or 6 of us who stayed behind decided to ride directly to the railroad tie climb area rather than doing the full Loop. To my disbelief, we had caught the main group! Total ride time: 2 minutes.

Everything was fine until we got to the DAM area. Mcgyver decided he wanted to take the final steep downhill in the dark. I tried to explain to him, if its too dark for the Iron Horse to do it, it would be near suicide for him to do it on his 42 lb. 9" travel XC bike! He did it anyway. He decided to take Woobie with him! Big mistake.

In total darkness, I heard someone saying, "Dino, is that you?" Yeah Woobie it is! "Mcgyver crashed!" For the second time in 45 minutes, I had witnessed a serious injury. I rode back to pick up MY STR ambulance. And that's when the fun really started...............

The Hospital.....

* Yours Truly, Ricky and "Sir Crash A Lot" (Mcgyver) made it to the hospital. We walk through the emergency room door- PAKIHA stares me in the face. All I could say is, "one more victim." All Pakiha could say was

* We walk up to the receptionist- "can I see your ID?" Barry's response: "it's in my pocket." Sir, can YOU help him with his ID? My response, you gatta be kidding me!!!"

*He couldn't lift his arm 2 inches yet they made him sign himself in!!

* There must have been 50 people inside (outside) of the emergency room waiting to be attended to. People throwing up, twisted legs, splints, mummies covered in blankets, people wearing masks- you name it we saw it!

* We meet the first ER attendant. He asked if Mcgyver was on any meds. We look at eachother and told him we "found" two pills on the trail. He took (1)____ and (1)_____. The look on that guys face!! Needless to say, he did not give Barry any additional medication.

*The next couple of hours were all about waiting.... and story telling!

*Mcgyver is the father of STR's youngest member (11 year old Slim Jim). While at the hospital, we met a nice 85 year old Lady. She was originally 5'6" tall. Today, she is 5'0" tall. Back pains- I wonder why? I asked if she was a mountain biker. She said her son was. She was a cute and very spunky little lady. Needless to say, she wants to join us at The Loop in a few weeks. If not, she promised to meet us for beers after the ride.

*The 75 year old man in a wheelchair... He kept calling me over to him- and asked me question after question. I will never forget his famous words, "put a bullit through my head." That is all he told the nurses! He was in pain and wanted a bullit! He told me he had kidney stones (6) times- today's pains were worse- ....put a bullit in his head. "Why won't they help me... Can't they see I am in pain...." The final time he called me over to him, he literally wanted to die. That guy started getting on my nerves. I thought he was simply a complaining old man. And then he did it- pulled up his pant leg to show a tomato red leg..... swolen..... when touched, the leg turned white. Holy sh!t- was he in bad shape. He had another hour wait ahead of him.... and YES, he asked/begged for a bullit in his head!

*THE POLICE- not 1, 2, but (3) police officers escorted some NIMROD into the the ER. He must have been important because a 4th officer had a digital SLR camera and was taking pictures.

* After two hours, Mcgyver FINALLY agreed to an ice pack. You know what? His pain went away. Noooooo!

* Mcgyver.... "You want some water? NO! Is your mouth dry? It is soooo dry. You think water would help? YES!" Idiot! So I got him some water.

* Mcgyver's 230 pound friend happened to be with someone in the ER. He "jokingly" offered to set the shoulder. Nothing gentle or compassionate about that guy! Scary if you ask me.

*Nurse walking in to the emergency room... spilled DOZENS of vials (presumably blood) all over the floor. They didn't break. As they fell, all I remember her saying is, Fffffffff#ck.

* The chief physician walks out and addresses those in the emergency room. "Sorry for the inconvenience, the ER has been shut down due to a HAZARDOUS WASTE SPILL." First a waste spill, another guy vomited everywhere... a third person had his chemotherapy filled cholostomy bag rupture while in the ER!

* I go to retrieve something out of McGyver's truck... when I return, CC has his shirt off and is applying a cold compress to his forehead

*At one point Mcgyver's pupils were sooo small..... it was almost scary.

*At this point, Mac was LOOPY. It was funny watching him have trouble composing his thoughts. His nose itched- watching him trying to guide his hand towards his nose was too funny!

* The physicians gave MAC an anti-nausea IV. That's funny, he didn't feel like vomiting. After receiving the IV, he started sweating, his pupils disappeared, he dosed off, woke back up and nausea kicked in. The attendant comes back, "do need more for your naseua?" After much thought, Mac said OK. Big mistake- it actually made him more nauseous. We all agreed, he should just vomit- which he did! Felt better right away.

* The attendant who set up Mac's three piece velcro shoulder strap was "less than gentle" when he fit it. He was throwing Mac's shoulder around like a rag doll. For some reason Mac wasn't complaining. I think he was just exhausted.

* The 4am truck ride to Mac's house- just Dino, Mac and (3) carboard vomit bowls. Thankfully, they were not needed.

The End!

Wow! Sounds like I got Jared out of there just in time. All we had going on around us were a couple of concussions. Sucks you guys had to wait that long, we were in and out in an hour. Anyways, good stories. It'll be a night you'll always remember!

Thumbs up sHEEESH...

I arrived at the ER after the post ride festivities...I thought it was going to be an easy in and out of the hospital for Mac. Then I got a call that they were still in the waiting room, so I decided to head over to see what was going on.

The waiting room was pack, they had xrays done, but were sent back to the waiting room. Then they called Mac into the ER and it was decided that i would go in with him. Dino and Ricky thought that Macgyver would keep it together better if a girl went in the room with him.

Yes, once again, as with Jared, I came up with the idea to take the jersey off before they cut it off....It was only for the sake of saving the jersey. (sorry Jenn, Jared fought it, but it was an STR jersey)!

At this point they did give Macgyver more meds, similar to morphin intraveinously, before they set his shoulder (that is what was really making him feel sick). This is when I started talking with Mac to distract him from feeling like he was going to vomit.

It was strange when the big guns came in to set his shoulder. They wrapped sheets around themselves as an ancor and around Berry's body and left arm. Then they kept pulling and pulling on his shoulder...then the two male nurser (210+ lbs)...think hmmm....have you injuried your shoulder before, cuz it didn't POP back in like it usually does. Macgyver answers yes and they decide to take an xray it to be sure it was already back in place.

I think they must have pulled on his arm about 5 or 6 more times than they needed too. And even though Mac was medicated he was definitely feeling it.

Personally, I think we could have done a better job oursleves.
All in all, it was definitely an interesting evening

Ryan is an EMT but he hasn't been riding with us lately. We could have used you last week Ryan. And I was telling him a few weeks ago I wanted to take some EMT or ermergency preparedness classes.

We were very fortunate because the loop is an urban area and connects across streets, however, if we were out on a trail in the middle of no where it's good to have someone who knows what they're doing along.

Thats ok CC. I understand. That jersey is sacred to him. If he doesn't care about flashing his pasty whiteness around, oh well, what can I do?

I'm trying to get my office ( lawfirm) to put up the money to become EMT certified. So I proposed it to our Emergency service/ Office services manager. It's all in the interestes of being prepared at the office

Wink Gee grasshoppers...

The mischief you guys get into when I don't show up!

I feel so inadequate... all I did was ride Aliso Woods for a couple of hours & go home, have dinner, veg on the couch watching TV and go to bed after walking the dog. You guys lead such interesting lives ... if you're into that sort of thing... I'd rather ride for 2 hours & go home in one piece... cause you don't heal very quickly the older you get.

Props to Dino & CC for STR nursing duties!

Just thought of (2) more...

* It was either the first or second day of work for one of the ER receptionists. She could not believe what was going on around her. Remember- the attractive.... young.... and leggy Latina that wanted to make Mac's stay a comfortable one!

* A man and woman come out of the MEN'S public restroom (in the ER). The woman is sobbing. She covers her face and walks briskly out of the ER. The guy tells the nurses , "it's OK.. it's OK, that's my wife!" Trust me, I just stood there in shock for a few seconds. I think she must have received BAD news~

Thanks for the great Blog Dino. Excellent nursing skills CC. I've had the pleasure of visiting the St. Jude ER more than once. It is WAY better than Whittier or Anacrime Memorial (even with the long wait).

Dino, your mountain bike obsession is showing:

and YES, he asked/begged for a bullit in his head!

I'm sure he (you) meant bullet as in 9mm hollow point and not bullit as in the iron horse eating Santa Cruz Bullit

Have a GREAT ride tonight!
