Beer! How did you know?

Default Abandoned Bike

I was riding Whiting this last Sunday and I made a weird discovery. There at the entrance to Borrego Canyon was an abandoned bike sitting in the bushes. Not a cheap bike, either. It was positioned so weirdly in the bushes that I immediately started thinking mountain lion attack. I thought an attack was totally unlikely but everything was just not right. There were also a pair of abandoned mtn biking gloves sitting on a post not too far from the bike.

I trudged through the bushes a bit to look for any down riders or any other clues but did not find any. As I came out I was confronted by a gang of teens who asked me about the bike. They said, in short, that they were going to jack the bike. I stopped them and told them I was surrendering it to the ranger. They backed off but still vowed to take the bike if it was there when they returned from their hike.

So I called the ranger but did not get an answer. Knowing that this was weird circumstances and that bike was about to be jacked, I decided to call the police. Lake Forrest PD came down and took the bike.

Later I talked with Ranger Kathy and told her the story. She headed down to the site and checked it out.

Moral of the story – if you left your bike at the entrance to Borrego Canyon on Sunday you are very stupid but lucky. Contact LFPD to get your bike .

Would it happen to be a Large Niner SIR? Then it's mine! Just kidding, all that sounds really fishy man. You totally did the right thing. Hopefully somebody didn't get hurt or attached on the trail and abandoned the bike.

it's good that you did that...something could have happened to the rider and he/she might have been whisked away for medical attention who knows, at least now it's in better hands than a bunch of kids.

Dude, if it was a large Niner SIR - we wouldn't be having this conversation...

True - and I forgot to mention that I was with the bike for over 40 minutes --- so it wasn't like someone just left it there for a few minutes to go buy or drink a beer.

This happened at Hodges a month or two ago. A really nice bike was propped up against a rock with nobody around at all. Weird stuff.

Maybe it was a Police sting, you know like To Catch A Predator. So the South Orange County Gang kids were going to try to take it? LOL what a F'en joke.

I remember hearing about a similar incident. The guy got dehydrated and was taken out and they just left his bike. Someone called around until they found out the details and had the bike picked up (can't remember if it was police or fire). It was one of those "one hand doesn't know what the other is doing" kinda things.
