Default All that stuff you take on a ride.... how do you pack it?

I was looking at the one thread that people shared what they took on a ride and it seems like a lot of stuff. I don't think my camelback and seat bag can haul that stuff.

I was curious how people carried all that stuff along?

This afternoon after I got back this afternoon I went for a ride to Performance Bikes and another shop on Colorado blvd looking at stuff to kill time and noticed something that I always laughed at...

a trunk frame and pack.

TOPEAK HANDLEBAR, SEAT AND RACK BAGS at JensonUSA.com

DIMENSION SEATPOST RACK at JensonUSA.com

Anyone use these things? Seems like you can pack a lot of stuff in those and then take them off when not offroading it.

I'm looking at building a kit/pack that other people take with them, just need something to put it in.

Just curious...as a 20 mile ride gives you plenty of time to think.

I have this: CAMELBAK MULE '07 at JensonUSA.com but a few years older. I've used it on rides up to and including 30ish miles. I don't have a lot of the survival type equipment that someone like Dean carries though.

Oh my: I should have saved that list. I do not carry everything at all times it depends on the ride.

Always haves:
water
camera
Compass
trail map
flashlight
cell phone
knife
lighter
multitool
tire pump
spare cleat bolt
spare chainring bolt
Sram power link
rear derailuer hanger
zip ties
light slicker
ductape
a couple of spare tubes and a ton of patches
tire boot made out of cutup milk jug
papermoney
firstaid kit
Emergency space blanket...can be used as rain shelter
pain medicine
tums for cramping
Emergen-C and Hammer Gel for bonking
Some type of real food..I like fryed chicken or Peanut Buter and Jelly sandwiches

On longer rides
GRMS 2-way radio
GPS unit
USGS Topo Maps
water filter
Gortex rain gear
leg and arm warmers
water bottle full of either Head (when hot out) or Perpetuem mixed very thick
extra food

And the most important...Mojo...Mojo is that cool stuff you find on the trail. For a long time it was a button of Smokey the Bear. Now it is a S car emblem that I found on last weeks ride. It was very approprieate, the theme of the day was Sand.

thanks Dean

that sounds like a pretty complete list of stuff to take.

If you dont mind, I'll probably use your list as a pattern for my own travel kit.

Do you think a spare chain is a good idea? I noticed a lot of people carry an extra bracket for the derailer and chain links... i don't know jack about changeing links. haha

Added to list...power link.

No you don't need a chain, on a geared bike just make the chain shorter and don't use your big ring. Fix when home.

Power Links kick ass. They're basically a chain link that can be taken apart and put back together with no tools. Very handy for quick trail repairs or for taking the chain apart real fast for cleaning.

linkage: SRAM POWERLINK at JensonUSA.com

thanks.

I've started to assemble some stuff and I can see a trunk pack in the future.. I would hate to have all that stuff hanging off my back.

I'm going to make a trip to jensonusa this coming weekend and pick up a few things mentioned.

I think an entire chain is a bit overkill unless your doing some serious back country long distance riding....

It appears that I have a lot to learn from you guys/gals in bikeing.

I would love to go out into the wilderness on a long trip but doubt I'll ever see how fast I can do a trail.

I pack everything into my Dakine Nomad pack with room to spare. The new style Nomad is much improved over the old style, but the new bladders suck. After 3 uses I switched the bladder to a camelbak 3 liter omega.

For trekking a trunk pack will probably work well but for faster rides you definately want to stay away from them as they will move around on their mount, esp on a hardtail
Here is the list:

Crank Bros Multi19 tool
Spyderco Temperance knife
Cell Phone w/GPS
2-3 Tubes
2 paks of quick patches
2 packs of tire boots
6 packs of Clif Shot Bloks
2 Ti tire levers
1 Nylon tire lever
1 small bottle of Boelube T9
1 Leatherman Charge Ti Tool
1 small can of pepper w/CS gas
Waterproof/windproof matches
$20 Cash
Wallet
Windproof lighter
Coast LED Lenzer flashlight
Bottle of Morphene, Vicodin and Neurontin
5 cans of BigAir CO2 & Dual inflator
Sunscreen
Camelbak Elixir electrolyte tablets
Pen
2 SRAM powerlinks
100 oz of water (minimum)
10 zipties
1 bottle of Brave Soldier Antiseptic spray
1 ultralight cyclist Adventure Medical Kit with extra bandaids and gauze
Chapstick
Bandana
Camera (optional)

I can post pics of the pack and organization if you like, just PM me

thanks for the list.

In combining lists from everyone in this thread and the other, I think the trunk would be good. I would secure it with more than just the 4 velcro straps it comes with.

The stuff I have assembled so far just about fills the box my skateboard helmet came in.

toilet paper being one of those larger things... can NEVER be without toilet paper and some handy wipes.

My list so far;

- allen wrenches (to be replaced with crank bros multi w/ chain tool.

- roll of toilet paper
- handy wipes
- travel bar of soap
- Leatherman w/ screwdriver adapter and bits
- folding HRT knife
- lighter
- maglight and 4 extra AA batteries
- BOTTLE of Crown Royal
- 2 tubes
- 1 slime tube
- 1 pack of patches (will pickup a few more soon)
- Co2 pump
- 3 co2 cartridges
- tire pressure gauge
- 2 presta to shrader adapters (slime is presta)
- Tire hand pump
- 1 dozen large zip ties

- Camelback (it can haul a fair amount of stuff)

I guess I am a Boy Scout vs you Rambo guys. I only carry what's necessary for the ride and pack more for longer rides.

If I know Dean is coming, I only bring the missing kitchen sink!

If your lazy or like pretty packaging, Target sells decent sized small rolls of Charmin in their travel section.

You can never have enough mountain money!
