In combining lists from everyone in this thread and the other, I think the trunk would be good. I would secure it with more than just the 4 velcro straps it comes with.

The stuff I have assembled so far just about fills the box my skateboard helmet came in.

toilet paper being one of those larger things... can NEVER be without toilet paper and some handy wipes.

My list so far;

- allen wrenches (to be replaced with crank bros multi w/ chain tool.

- roll of toilet paper
- handy wipes
- travel bar of soap
- Leatherman w/ screwdriver adapter and bits
- folding HRT knife
- lighter
- maglight and 4 extra AA batteries
- BOTTLE of Crown Royal
- 2 tubes
- 1 slime tube
- 1 pack of patches (will pickup a few more soon)
- Co2 pump
- 3 co2 cartridges
- tire pressure gauge
- 2 presta to shrader adapters (slime is presta)
- Tire hand pump
- 1 dozen large zip ties

- Camelback (it can haul a fair amount of stuff)

How much does all that weigh?

Too much...

I don't know how you guys carry so much stuff.

It's not THAT much weight but definately noticable.

[quote=mechmann;81565]when my pack is full at the beginning of a ride, it usually weighs between 25 and 35lbs.

WOW.....

I think the real question is, how far do people ride and is most of it just "preparing for the worst"?

i carry very little on road rides because you never leave "civilization".

i do carry lots of stuff that doesn't get used much. water proof matches, a space blanket, extra tools and parts like brake pads and chain links and chain ring bolts. in the event that i need them, i want to have them!

granted, if i am 15 miles from help and my bike won't work i can probably hike out...

but the guy that died on The Plunge last year was inside of 10 miles from town!
Makes complete sense.

It's just hard to envision needing that much stuff.

its a pistol. small. Just hope I never have to use it. I thought that guy who died on the plunge got bitten by a snake. Correct me if im wrong but 30 mile epics do require lots of water. To me water is the main thing. DO they make a bladder that holds more than 100 oz. ?

Just buy another bladder and feed the tube through the other shoulder strap on your backpack. Thats what I do for really long rides. Plus I'll put a 20oz bottle of my favorite mix on my frame.

And one thing I never leave home without is a spare clete and bolts! I rode Aliso once and poped off one of my shimano cletes. its damn hard to ride back without them
