Default A real mtb race...

What would you think if the two fastest guys on bikes in the world were to race in the dirt? Well, it's on!!! Lance & Landis will be doing the Leadville 100 afterall. This is what a lot of riders consider the hardest bike race there is in a day, and I'd agree. It is at least one of the toughest. I don't know how yet, but I will be going.

I've been looking for a place to make a road trip to.
Might have found the location.

Lance and Floyd both have plenty of MTB handling skills, I just wonder if they will survive the killer mosquitoes in Leadville, worst place I have ever been, as far as mosquitoes go.

Chances are they won't either make the top five. That's not their specialty. They are both roadies first and foremost, they don't claim to be anything but that. As far as skills go, anyone who has spent as much time on a bike as they have will have plenty of skills. I have no doubt they'd hand our asses to any of us. landis was a mountain biker before he went road, he was the national junior champion of the USA. Don't forget the Tour de France is spaced out almost a month and takes a level of condition few people can reach. This is a one day race and not the same type of racing. This is more like a sprint type of race of which neither has raced in a very long time. I don't look for either to come in first, but it sure could be a boost for mountain biking. We don't get a fraction of the spectators road biking gets. this will only help our sport.

Wise words. I wonder if this means that ESPN will finally televise mountain bike races. I mean they show everything but MTB.(ro-sham-bo championship, hot dog eating, bowling, hula hoop, etc).

Landis was an accomplished MTB Racer in the early 90s I am pretty sure and even won some National Championships. He should have an edge against Lance but its hard to count Lance out. I think both of them will place in the top 10 but neither will win.

I don't know if Landis has been riding/training much. I was talking with former teammate Monique (Monique Sawiki aka Pua) and she almost beat him at the Teva games a few weeks ago. I'm guessing Lance has kept up with the riding and will have a slight edge.

Landis was on Air America a couple of days ago. Nice interview. He said he had ridden on Mulholland the day before.

It's tough......but I'd say it wouldn't make the top five list of the hardest one day races in the US. The E100, Kokopelli Trail Race, Cascade Cream Puff and Kaibab Monster Cross are all considerably harder than Leadville. As long as you're comfortable climbing for hours on end.....Leadville isn't too bad. It's also the most well supported race I've ever seen.....it's not Bruyneel in a team car but it's close!

All that being said.....I would put money on one of them winning the thing. Dave Weins will put up a good fight but Lance/Floyd will likely outclimb him on the Columbine Mine climb. However....some of the steeper climbs(powerline) will give Weins an advantage.

One thing is for sure.......Leadville will be a drop in the bucket for guys of their caliber.

It will be a fun spectator event, that's for dang sure. I might show up on friday and try to snag the spot of someone who didn't show up(didn't get through the lottery this year)....if that doesn't work I'll at least get to watch some great racing.
