Hi guys, looking to get my wife into riding, what bike you guys & gals recommend? I was looking at the Specialized Rockhopper Sport.

When my husband (Pakiha) wanted to get me started, we went and got a Specialized Stumpjumper. I love, it's been good to me, and to him as he's taken it on a couple harder rides than I'll do. But love my bike, and my main tip would be to let her ride it before you buy it. I had no idea what to get, so we went to SuperGo (now Performance) and I picked out a couple, tried em out, and fell in love with my pretty blue bike. Just make sure it makes her happy!

I like the stumpjumpers too but, she doesn't want me spending too much money on her. If she really likes riding, I can upgrade her later.

Yeah, I agree. When I buy something for my wife that she doesn’t know too much about she’ll ask, “Is that something you buy for yourself”?

My wife doesn't know too much about bikes, but after buying 3 consecitive bikes which she could have only logged about 50 miles total on, I rented a few for her to try out. She found out this much, suspension, & disc brakes are a girls best friend. Don't forget to drop a small fortune on matching shorts & tops, all Fox. My wife still only rides once a month which is better than nothing!

Edog probably has it right on the money. Rent/demo a few and let her decide what feels best. Use your experience with regard to component package, wheels, tires and brand but let her decide which bike feels best. If you make her part of the decision process it will be her bike, not the bike you got for her

That is the best advice. She needs to ride it before you buy and she also needs to approve the looks of the bike.

My wife tried my sister's Rockhopper WSD, she loved it and we bought one for her. That was a couple of years ago, almost 2,000 miles ago. The Rockhopper has been a great bike for her. A few weeks ago, her Rockhopper was in the shop getting worked on, she rode my Stumpjumper. She loved it. I wasn't sure I'd get it back, but I did. Now, when we can, we'll be buying her a Stumpjumper. Let her pick what she likes, and let her set her own pace on the trails. Have fun!

If you can, try before you buy like everyone says. Buy the best bike you can afford because you'll want a light bike. It'll help her climb easier. Of couse, you'll want the bike to fit her properly too because if she's not comfortable, she's not gonna ride and that means less riding time for you.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll drive her around, testing a few bikes out. Until she finds one she likes. I'll also get her the matching shorts and jersey too She's worried about seat comfort too. What do the ladies have for bike seats? Addon jelly seats??

Honestly, I've only been in this game for about 5 months. I confiscated my brother's stumpjumper when it came home from Germany with the rest of his crap and I've been hooked ever since. He comes home next month and wants his bike back. What bike? i say. So I've tried and tried many, many "so called bikes" that don't measure up. Yeah, I probably don't know what the F I'm talking about, but from a chick's perspective, I love the stumpjumper.

Have her join...we have a private ladies forum with a thread on saddles or any other women's specific questions but love my specialized Avatar Gel. Have it on two bikes but make sure she gets her seat bones measured for the correct size.
Oh and WELCOME to STR

This is the bike my wife has and loves it! She went through Fishers, Ellsworths, and Special ed's. But defienetly have her demo a few first, fit is the most important. If she is uncomfortable, she will not ride it. Good Luck!
