it was a hot one. i felt so sluggish today, no snap in the legs at all.

padre that's a scary story. glad everything ended up ok. Pretty frightening.

my friend's daughter died in moab from heat stroke in 2005. Beyond tragedy. Link is here, everyone shoudl read this.

Default Yup -It was hot

Hit El Moro today thinking it would be cooler at the coast (wanted to ride SCSS w/OMR but couldn't make the wake up call). HA! Not so cool - 82 degrees in the parking lot. Did a modified ride and noticed we weren't sweating that much but had salt deposits on our skin. It was incredibly DRY; my voice sounds like I've been in a smoky bar all day. Only option for tomorrow would be a ride at dawn ...

Thumbs up

Ah, heat exhaustion. I'm very familair with it.........

This was a few years back, on at the top of STT after doing Joplin. I'm the one with my head down wishing it was cooler.

And a little farther down on the climb after passing the Luge.

I was WACKED! Dizzey, I couldn't sweat, and I puked just after Winston took this picture.

I ended up riding and walking down most of the rest of the way, until I finally crawled under a bush and laid down. Luckily Wiston road back up to get me, and helped me get down the rest of the way.

I've learned over the years to start hydrating2-3 days BEFORE a ride or race you know is gonna be HOT!

I HATE SUMMER!!

Ben ran out of water halfway down Coldwater last July.

Two summers ago (maybe the same weekend as Padre had his experience? edit: was July 21-23) Justin and I had recently gotten lights and due to extremely high temps and humidity we went up and rode Hurkey Friday night way after dark. Got home around midnight, slept, did whatever on Saturday (I forget). Left home around 7 Saturday night to do San Juan on night. There were thunderstorms over OC as we climbed up, but it was clear (hot and humid) above us. I didn't eat anything at Cocktail Rocks and was bonking pretty hard on the way down (3 crashes).

Got home around midnight and got up around 8 on Sunday morning. Started riding Aliso about 10-11? It was HOT. We had really cold water in the bladders, and going up Mathis Justin was spraying me down. It was sooo hot, though. At some point I stopped and just tried to sit down and realized how HOT the ground was. I couldn't even sit. He was getting goosebumps. I figured he'd want to continue, but we decided to head down. It was actually *really* cool in the canyon on the way back, but we drove all the way over there for about 4.5 miles

Needless to say... don't ride two nights and not properly fuel/hydrate and expect to go ride the third morning in the heat!

Padre's story is scary! That's what I don't get. Even though you are hydrating, your temp. still goes up. You still get heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It sneaks up you.

Impy, I read that story years ago. Tragic & heartbreaking!

I had two friends racing the state championships in Bakersfield years ago. These are trained racers that know what to do and prepare for a race and yet, Linda, the captain, fainted on the front. It was in the 100's for that years racing. They went down hard but sustained no major injury.
Another tandem team, man and woman, same year were racing and he said Cathy! Quit bouncing your head on my back". Some stokers duck to reduce wind drag. Long story short, she was passed out and literally almost died. Wrapped in ice. Hospital for who knows how long and a year later, she was still recovering and weak!
Heat stroke is scary sh*t and I have no regrets about missing the Mulholland Challenge today! Actually, I'm thrilled!!

I have two friends that did Mulholland today, still waiting to hear back from them. Today was weird, They were predicting mid 80's when I rolled out at 8:00 am on the road bike, I knew it was hot but I just figured I wasn't used to the heat this early in the season. As I started to crack at mile 80 as I was heading home I was thinking "what a wimp I am". After a nice cold shower I checked the weather on the computer......holy&%$, 100°. Well that explains feeling a little rough towards the end. getting ready to do it again tomorrow. The one underlying theme with competitive cyclists, short term memory for suffering, it's essential.

One of my friends took 8 hours and 15 minutes. I called another and I said 'can you roll up your window up? There's too much wind noise.' and she said 'Of course theres wind noise,I'm still on my bike'. She said, aren't you glad you didn't do this stupid event? Yeah, I rolled 30 miles flat and got pelted by ladybugs and it was over 80 at the beach and I was singing the blues on small inclines. Go away virus..go away!! Heat sucks!
