Today on my road clubs ride we had a very strong rider suffer from heat exhaustion. It wasn't pretty and it scared the bejeezus out of us.
We decided to do the long ride, about 50 miles. Our club split into a couple groups so we weren't all together, but we had some support either way. I went with the fast group and was working hard to keep up, I'd fallen off the back a few times, but always managed to catch back up.After we hit the halfway point and headed back towards home one of our riders dropped off the back, I was now in the front and didn't notice he was missing till we did our regroup. It was decided that I should go back and look for him while the rest of the group continued on to our next rest stop. I went about 4 or 5 miles back and I was thinking maybe he abandoned. I finally found him on the side of the road lying under a tree in the shade. I thought he might have been taking a break. I got to him and he wasn't consious. He was out! I tried to wake him, but he just moaned. I called 911 and got put on hold. about that time a car pulls up and a lady asks me if everything is okay? I tell her whats going on and she says she's a doctor and can help. She jumps out of her car and starts putting water over my buds head. He wakes almost immediately but say's he's sick. Finally 911 answers and I tell them the situation. They dispatch an ambulance and 5 minutes later he's on his way to the hospital. I got a call about 2 hours later letting me know he's going to be okay, but it was close. He doesn't remember getting off his bike or anything else from about an hour or so before that. I called the ride leader and let him know what happened. Just a warning folks, you may think you're okay and you maybe a strong rider, but if the heat is getting to you, pull over and let yourself cool down. Personally I like it hot and these are my favorite days of the year.

That is a good post with good advice. We need to remember not to push each other to keep up when it is this hot out and keep a close eye on each other.

Wow Mike, thank God that you guys regrouped when you did. I'm glad to hear everything turned out ok. I know yesterday was so hot on Strawberry Peak...I kept hydrating, but i could not get my core to cool down, so it was a good call to pull over a chill in the shade for awhile.
Thanks for the reminder to hydrate.

Thanks for the thread! YESTERDAY, I was pretty close to being there myself!!!
I drank water on the way to the Strawberry Peak ride, a bottle before the ride and two water bottles during the ride. Still wasn't enough. I learned my lesson the hard way. Let's hope no one else has to..... |

Thanks for the post ... we all think it can never happen to us.
I would add the importance of adding some type electrolytes to the mix. After today's ride in the heat I was cramping like nobodys business. ![]() Scott

I wear a thin cotton t-shirt under my jersey just so the sweat doesn't evaporate so fast on hot days. i may be drenched by the end of the ride but i know i'm not burning up. hopefully this might work for some of you.

What works for me, take it easy, breaks in the shade, big chucks of ice in the Camelback and a water bottle of Heed.
Summer rides: I freeze 5 Dixie cups of water then put them in the Camelback with water...ice cold water for 3-4 hours. Shorter rides less ice. Added benifit of keeping my lunch cold. Dean
