Default Spot's Last Ride

First off a big "Thank You" to Dino Brown for coming back to check on me…THX Buddy I owe ya.

Today on the Strawberry Loop ride, my 5-Spot’s frame snapped at the seat tube. Nothing spectacular to report, like a major huck, crash, or a left bike on top of the car…drive into garage story. Just many miles, older frame and a heavy rider...the frame just gave up. Bike was not rideable, any weight on the frame pushed broken seat tube into the back tire. While in the process of trying to Macgyver the frame to coast back down Josephine fireroad, of a couple of guys suggested to drop the seat post all the way down…Do’H. It took all three of us to compress suspension and line things up but we got it so a could coast out. Had to keep all my weight on the front tire and front brake on to keep in form rubbing…but better than a 3.5 miles hike after already hiking a couple of miles. Another thanks to the 1000 Oaks Mtbers (see pic) that helped me.

The frame is way out or warranty and I do not expect Turner to replace it but Tani at the Path will call Monday and see what they say...a frame tradein and upgrade maybe resonable. The bummer is 5-Spot frames are hard to find right now…next batch is not due for another month or two. Hopefully Turner has some replacement frames stashed away.

I have been thinking about building a light clown wheeled geared bike. So while I wait on a Turner frame Tani will move over the parts that will work and build me up a Niner RIP. The next question is what Turner Frame to build up, my Z1 Light should work on either a 5-Spot or a RFX. If the RIP turns out to be a good all day bike I will go with a RFX. After 160mm of Zoke plushness the 100mm travel Reba does not feel very good.

Good to hear nothing spectacular happened. Turner's gotta have couple older 5Spot front triangles around for warranty. Tani had a med blue Sultan there a few weeks ago. That's already sold? No interest in a Sultan Dean?

Craig, any year medium 5-Spot, 5-pack, or RFX frame would make me happy right now. I don't want to buy a fork and would like to keep my DHX-5 shock.

As we all know it is not always what we want but more often what we can get.

Yes The Sultan is still there and I have rode it, it has to much XC geometry for my liking. RIP's geo just feels better...and will feel better yet when a decent fork comes out.

Tani has a bunch of 07 RFX's but they are all Large frames...besides I need to hear what Turner says on Monday.

Let me know if I can help.

It took us a long time to finish the ride today, but it was as fun as always. We found a little mexican food joint on Foothill that was pretty good.

Thanks Mike for the offer, problem is nothing that throwing money at it won't fix.

I bet it got hot around the back side of Strawberry, that climb goes in and out of the trees. I have cooked out there before.

CC said it was a little to hot and Dino had some issues with the water (or lack of), but as usual I thought it was near perfect.

Bummer Steppie, sorry to hear about your loss. However I think you should look at it as a positive thing and look into an RFX frame......with your Z1 on your Spot it is obvious you like a more laid back geometry anyway as you mentioned talking about the Sultan. Not sure what your 5-Spot weighed in at but my RFX/Pack with the '07 66 SL built fairly beefy still only weighs 33.7lbs and it is a medium frame. Just something to consider instead of another Spot

Rob I share your thoughts, that is why I am building up the RIP light...for CX use. My Spot was a heavy build 31-32 lbs. I had it under 29lbs once and like it better heavy. One thing keeping me back form the 07 RFX is I can't use the DHX-5 and the 160mm Z1 may not be enough fork. A earlier than 07 RFX with my Horst Spot rear triangle is what I am looking to do.

Dude I know, it would have sucked if it broke when you where riding it.

If it had to break I was gald that it waited a couple of weeks. Only a couple of rides earlier I was on a road trip to Kernville.

Bummer dude. If DT gives you a trade in allowance go with the RFX, throw the fork and the rest of the parts on it. You'll have to buy another DHX-c but you should be able to sell the old one.

That is the outcome that most likely will happen. I know DT gives ya $600 on your old frame, on a upgrade...well my frame needs to be upgraded. I have to go back and read Tscheezy threads, he gets 7 inchs rear travel out of a RFX front triangle with a 5-Spot rear.

The bottom bracket, cassett, chain, cranks, derailuers/shifters, stem, handlebars, seat, brakes and rotors can all be moved over. What I have to buy for the Niner RIP build is: frame, fork, wheelset and seatpost. Should be done Monday.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Dean.

I dare you to call the guys at Turner and tell then the story by starting out with

"Well, I was just riding along and the frame broke..."

I hope they make it right
