Question Redline 29'er monocog?

Man, long time no type! I know it's my fault as things been busier than busy in these parts.
Glad to see STR is still kicking azz! I've been sporting my jersey on rides!

So here's my situation:
I'm saving my pennies to purchase an SS rig. An LBS has the RedLine Monocog 29'er for ~$475. Not the best price, but what can you do, eh?

I'd love to get something fancier, but there's just no way I can afford it anytime soon....

JoSe, any comment on long term "solid-ness" of the RL? You still digging it?

Jose moved on from the redline - he's now the proud ownerr of a green niner.

LANCE!! Good to hear from ya. How have things been? Sorry to derail - you can PM if you like.

Yup, Jose upgraded. If you have spare parts lying around the ZION 29'er pretty nice. I've had mine for over a month now and ride it everyday and LOVE it.

No worries about de-railing!

Was just reading the Niner thread a second ago and saw that jose has moved on. Yeah, a niner would be sweet, but at that price I wouldn't be able to afford it for some time!

I know he rode the Redline like a madman in SoCal. The trails here are no where near as "rigorous" as Cali trails. That's not to say they are not challenging or enjoyable--just different, East-coast style riding.

Seems like the RedLine is a logical starting place in terms of afford-ability and overall consumer satisfaction. I'm just looking for a "return to the basics" simplicity and something that would "up the ante" and the challenge of these trails.

Life-wise, things are going well out here. Spent this week doing bat surveys in the Uhwarrie mountains and last week doing aquatic plant surveys on the coast. The diversity keeps things interesting.
Eve is doing well and enjoys her job at Duke U.

Still cranking away at the dissertation. Making progress and I Hope to be done in Dec, but it might be May. I'll post up when my publication comes out so you all can be wow'ed by my smarts....just kidding .

It's HOT and majorly HUMID, but I've been riding on the weekends and during the week when possible. Not nearly as much as I'd like, but at least I'm getting out. Did I mention that it's HUMID!!!

Glad to see STR kicking it with 1000 peeps! That freaking rocks! Wish I could be at the shin-dig....

Hope all you cats are doing well! I think about ya'll everytime I hit the trails!

In my super NOOB opinion i say pull da triggaaa NOWWW!!! The redline was the best purchase I’ve ever done!! It was cheap, convenient and effennn fun to ride!! Specially when u have no skillss doing the ssing thing and with little money to spend! if u still like the SSing thing after a year or so I say jump to a better frame but most likely u will ride that thing till it drops!! and punishment it will take fooo sure!!

ECO-
I just got the 26" version at a pretty good price of around $500. It has been nothing but a blast to ride. I've ridden it more than my FS since I got it.

Upgraded the brakes, headset and changed out the forks with stuff that I laying around in the garage of mine.

With the amount of $$ you can spend on bikes these days, it has been money well spent.

I would say go for it. Good price and loads of fun.

Appreciate the responses guys!

A good buddy of mine has an older mono 26" with some upgraded wheels/hubs and parts that he'd sell me for probably ~$250. It's a great deal, but he'd have to ship it from Vermont. So it becomes a little bit less of a good deal when you tack on 60 - 80 bones for shipping. And I don't know what year it is and if it has disc brake mounts.

So I end up coming back to the idea that I could get a NEW, 29'er (which intrigues me), for a little bit more dough.

I can't offer any advice on the 29'r front but I'd be happy to further derail this thread.

Glad to hear you and Eve are doing well. I just watched your farewell ride vid recently and it brought back memories of some great rides and times.

Bat surveys? You must really be loving your new gig. Bats freak me out.

Still homebrewing? I'm thinking about giving it a try.

The bat stuff is crazy. It's like two days of work in one as you do sh!t all day, get an hour or two break, then start setting up at 6pm, and hang out by the nets until 1ish in the AM. But I built up enough comp time to take friday off with more hours to spare!

Also been doing some scuba diving and snorkling for freshwater freshwater mussel surveys. We're not talking monster dives in far-off locales, but it's a good time anyhow.

Plant, Amphibian, and bird surveys are not as exotic but are still pretty fun. This job doesn't pay great but it is hard to believe I get paid at all to tromp around in the woods looking for plants and animals.

Yeah, I bust out the farewell vid when I'm missing SoCal and you guys extra bad....that rocked!

Sadly, I haven't had much time or $$$ these days to be brewing beer (in part b/c of riding and trying to save money for SS-rig). I last brewed an ESB that turned out pretty good. Next up will probably be a Rye Pale Ale. Similar to an IPA but using Rye in addition to regular grains, and heavily hopped.

I like my ipa's uber-hoppy! I made an Oak-aged IPA that came out beatifully....Like mana from heaven in a bottle!

I'm growing some hops too! Hope to have enough crop this year to make a "Harvest Ale" in the fall.

I'd love to get a kegging system, which is the way to go if you can afford it. But again, I think of all the cool biking stuff I can get for the money and end up sticking to bottling.

Been on my MC 29er since Sept./Oct. It has pretty much replaced my beloved SC Chameleon as my #1 choice for rides. Yeah, it is a little heavy.....but it is a lot of fun.

Mine didn't las too long stock. Right outta the box I swapped the bars and grips to something wider. Soon after the headset went and replaced it. Swapped the wire beaded tires for some foling beads. After about 7 weeks running ridgid, decided to put a Reba on it.....so Juicy 7's went along with the fork. Just recently swapped out the cranks and BB for some Truvativ's I had lying around in the parts bin.

I am just curious how many of you are running 26SS versus 29SS bikes?

Thanks Gabriel, but it ends up seeming like a "draw" and then there is the desire to support the LBS...

Bret- Good to hear from you bro! If I could figure out how to ship beer without it costing an arm and a leg, then I'd do it! Just go out and buy some damn good brews and pretend that I made it!
