Ok guys, well the Kona Unit 29er frame that I bought was defective due to 3% cracking at the head tube. I am looking to upgrade.
![]() I am looking at the Niner One9 and the Niner Sir9. Since I have ridden the steel frames and love the feel, I am partial to the Sir9. But, since the One9 is sooooo light, it sparked my interest. Does anyone have any ideas for me on which one to go with. IS the ride quality of the Scandium that much harsher than the 853 butted steel frame? Give me your thoughts and opinions..... Thanks guys! |

I have owned a Kona Unit and I currently have a One-9. I will bring the Medium One-9 to Fully Loop tonight if you want to try it.
I am 220 lbs so for me to enjoy a steel bike it would need to be a custom build frame. Off the shelf bikes are not designed for my weight. That said the Unit was to flexy for my weight and bounce badly when I spunout. Yes that mostly due to poor bike skills but I have never been a spinner I am a masher. The Niner is much stiffer and no bounce when spinning out but I also helps running 2x1 gearing. My weight can even tweak the Niner frame and I can get some back tire buzz when climbing...Exi is the widest tire I can run on the back. Also remember the One-9 is a Singlespeed only frame and Sir9 can go both ways. Dean

I am not a fan of horizonal dropouts. I am not familar with that frame but it does not look like it has tug nuts.

Especially when you are climbing and torque the frame, the dropouts move and then you stand up to climb and then the chain falls off and you demolish the back of your leg with your egg beaters. I am quickly becoming a non fan of horizontal dropouts..... I am with you....EBB all the way now....

The steel frame will give you years of usuage... feels great and can usually be repaired if broken. I also like the simplicity and functionality of the EBB.

I would probably go with the SIR.
I have a scandium Voodoo now. The ride quality isn't that bad, but I always feel a little uneasy when it gets rough. Scandium tubing is pretty thin, and I've seen some frame failure pics - not good. So - when the budget (and wife) allows, I'll probably be getting something made of steel instead. |

That $450 Red One9 is hard to pass up. Sooo pretty, and such a good deal. I would have pulled the trigger on that but I just don't know yet if I'm ready for an SS only bike. |

I would have bought the one9 if they had the right size for me. They only have one frame left on sale and they were all XL's. |
