I was wondering what type of tires you guys suggest to replace a set of Bontrager Big Earl's with. The Big E's are 26X2.35 they have been temporarly replaced with a set of worn out Maxxis Minion 26X2.35 F&R due to the Big E's causing a real bad vibration. The suggeted tires will be ridden mainly in all of the OC trails and if it matters they'll be going on a Trek Remedy 66.

I'm not sure if the Big Earl's are tubeless or not but if you have a tubeless setup, you might want to consider a set of Hutchinson Octopus UST 26 X 2.3 tires. Although no longer in production, you can still pick these tires up at a few online bike stores at a fraction of their original $69.95 price tag (they also come in a larger 26 X 2.5 size, which are readily available but are REALLY heavy, have high rolling resistance and are strictly for DH).
The Octopus tires, like the name suggests, are super grippy and are very, very durable. I ran them fairly aggressively on OC trails and in the Arizona desert with Stan's tire sealant for no less than 18 months without a single problem (only thorns produced a puncture which the Stan's took care of right away -- must be some kind of record...). Anyway, when I finally (reluctantly) changed 'em out, the knobs had all but worn right off ![]() I am now running Hutchinson Barracuda Tubeless Light tires, which have the same "Octopus" profile in a much lighter (695 grams), slightly smaller (26 X 2.1) cross-country format and they perform just as well in loose soil/rocky conditions (although they appear to be wearing at a quicker rate). You can check out what other people have to say about these tires at mtbreview.com Hope this helps ![]()
