Here is what I have learned...

Dork=singlespeeder
2:1=standard gearing everywhere but SoCal
boinger=suspension bike
full boinger=full suspension
beer=good!

chainline=That thing you always blame whenever something goes wrong on the bike.

Cog=It is never the right size

SS Chain= Expect to buy multiple chains, because it is either too long or too short for the gears you want to run. Also expect to buy another chain tool because SS chains are stronger than any other known substance in the universe, you may consider investing in a jackhammer

EBB= A tesioning device that, when used correctly, allows you to turn a bike with perfect ergonomics into one where you get constant backaches and saddle sores.

Horizontal Dropouts=Another way to tension the chain. To use this effectively you need four hands. (One to hold up the bike, one to push the bike forward, one to pull the wheel backward and one to tighten the bolts on the axle.

Eno Eccentric Hub=No body knows what this is or how it works. In fact, no one has ever seen one. Supposedly it allows you to turn any bike into a singlespeed without a tensioner. I hear Bigfoot and Loch Ness Monster use them

Paragon Dropouts=An extremely complicated brake and chain tensioning system. If you have less than a 185 I.Q. AND a degree in mechanical engineering then don't even try to use one of these.

Hill=The bane of a Singlespeeders existence. Going up you have no gears so you end up walking, going down gravity propels you faster than you can pedal. Any more than a 1% grade counts as a hill

Welcome to singlespeeding. Find a comfortable section of wall right now and begin banging your head against it. Get used to this

Too funny. Where do I get one??
The greatest benefit to a fully suspended geared bike is there are some many more components you can blame when you are having trouble on a trail.

You'll see why singlespeeders don't really care what seat is on the bike - it's rarely used.

You'll see why singlespeeders like wide handlebars (required for power).

You'll see why singlespeeders are lazy. Once you get over the learning curve, you'll find that it's easier to ride than practically anything else - yes, even on most hills.

And while you're starting, there's no shame in walking. If you do have to walk, and your buddies on gearies give you cr@p, tell them to get out of their damn granny gear, and ride the bike faster than you can walk it.

29er - It took me a long time to decide, about 50 feet on a demo bike.

I have a 26 SS. I haven't ridden a 29er and I had a chance to try one last night on the Fully loop when Dean(dstepper) offered. I really don't want to because I'll probably want one. In fact, I know I will.

It's probably just a matter of time

After reading all the "lingo" and reasoning for a single speed, what's the attraction to ride one again???????

My SS is 26 also (Surly 1x1), though I'd love to put the rigid fork back on there and build up a 29er wheelset.

Because we needed an excuse to buy another bike.

Try to get one that will do gears and singlespeed, that way if you don't like it you can switch to gearie

Like we needed it. It's been my experience that the only excuse we need is because the sun was up.

It's good to hear we have a bunch of pain junkies here. I was beginning to think this place had gone soft....
