I still dont have a fork... but I'm selling some items on my car to get money for one. Recommendations? I'm looking in the 200 dollar range. And I think dino said the (head tube?) needed to be 10 inches in length to fit my bike.
Dino if you see this post can you clarify for me... I still dont know the technical biking mumbo jumbo. |

What Dino was trying to say... "Hey Junior, if you had not stumbled your way home at 5:30am (due to a wild night of skirt chasing and ), we could have picked you up a new fork." I totally "understand" you want to live the Guero lifestyle... forks come first!!! I'll call you.. |

Sorry bout that. Couldn't help myself.
The fork I'd recommend would be very high in price, but I love the Talas from Fox. It has more adjustments then I care for, but once you get it dialed in ( and remember your settings ) it is an awesome fork. But keep in mind, it will need work and maintenance as you use it. Great fork for all kinds of conditions. Runner up though is a fork that I just tried again and now I'm sold on it too. It's Rock Shox ( I'm still PO'ed at them, but hell, it's a good fork) is the PIKE 454 air. I was really suprized at how silky smooth this fork is and for the money I think it's a good deal. I don't know the logevity for this fork as RS has had their problems in the past, but now with Sram being the new owners, this may be rectified.

What about a RS Tora? For an entry level fork I've heard they're not bad. U-turn 85-130mm adjustable travel. $215 bucks.
ROCK SHOX TORA 302 COIL U-TURN FORK '07 at JensonUSA.com Or one of the Marz All mtn. forks on sale. But they may change the handling of your bike by slackening the headangle because these are 130mm. Marzocchi All Mountain 3 Suspension Fork 2005 at Price Point |

I think you should stay within the 80 to 100mm range, most Hardtails are designed to run a fork within that travel range. If you run too much travel, the steering/cornering will suffer. The exception is dirt jumping H/Ts, they can run 145 to 160 because they don't need to corner but need to soak up the landings.
Air versus coil? Unless you want to change coil springs, get air. Most coil forks come sprung medium, for a rider in the 160 to 180 range. With air, you just pump it up. Air forks have come a long way in the sealing department in the last 5 to 7 years, so leaking shouldn't be a problem. The only problem is $, air is usually more costly b/c it is built lighter for higher end bikes. Don't skimp on a fork! It's easy to say b/c it's not my money. If you plan on keeping this bike for a while than spend a little extra cash and get a decent fork. A good deal on a fork doesn't always mean it's the best fork for your bike, shop and compare. It's like finding a killer deal on a bike that is sized too small or big for you, if it doesn't fit you, pass it up. Now the size thing... I'm also 230 lbs (6' 5") and the problem can be finding a fork that can take the weight. Most 80 to 100mm forks are for X/C use and built light (thin) to work best on that type of terrain. I doubt you'll be doing 3 to 5 foot drops, but at that weight a 1 foot drop could be an equivalent load on the fork to over stress it (read, break it). Don't be too quick to buy the wrong fork, I bought a Marz. MX comp 100/120 ETA for my S/Works FSR and it was a "deal" but worked out to be a bit on the weak side for my size. I'm lucky b/c this bike is my "triple" back up bike and it doesn't see much of the trails except if I'm racing. Make sure the steer tube is long enough! I run X/L frames and most of my steer tubes are at least 9 inches long. If someone has a fork for sale with a short steer tube and says you can just have a longer one installed beware! This can be quite costly to replace and I don't really recommend it. The difference between an inexpesive fork and a quality fork on the trail is "priceless". You may want to step up and spend a few dollars more and don't be in a hurry to buy the wrong fork. Good luck, Jeff |
